My fiancé are going to have a student photographer (no experience with engagement photos) take some engagement pictures of us, and we would like to pay her something. How much would be appropriate to pay the student? The picture taking will probably be around an hour or an hour and a half. $50? $75? $100?

Hmm..our engagement photos were 2 hours and they cost us $400 which included 12 free prints and all the rights to our photos (on discs). Have you seen this students work? What do you think she is worth? Has she ever done any sort of portraits such as family photos or baby photos? I would say depending on her skill level and quality of work you could pay between $50-150. Definitely see what other types of shoots she has done before making this decision and paying her money!

I would say anywhere between $50-$100 would be fine. They are most likely looking to build their portfolio…so you are both benefitting from this photoshoot! A lot of student photographers offer free sessions to just get the experience for the future. My husband did his first engagement shoot and was taken out for a meal in return. He was happy with that 🙂

I agree with PitBulLover. I think another thing to think about is how much work are they putting into the photos? Are they going to take pictures and then just give you all the prints? Or are they going to edit them and work to make them looks like professional photos? In the end just be sure to try and pay them what is fair and remember that you probably chose a student so you could save money. There’s got to be some kind of a balance in there somewhere. 🙂

As a student photographer myself I would say $75 – $150 would be great. Even though she is just starting off she is still doing quite a bit of work for you. I usually base my prices off of what the client wants also. Are you getting a CD with the images or are you having her print them? Is she editing them or are you? Depending on those things I may charge more or less.

Thanks for the feedback! I have seen lots of her pictures and although she doesn’t display any portrait photos, I can’t wait to work with her because her strongpoint is taking candid photos (the ones I love!). She is a very experienced photographer (like with difficult lighting, apertures, etc), just not with couples and such. We haven’t discussed yet if she will give me a disc or editing yet so I will have to bring that up when I meet with her in the next few weeks.

Our engagement and wedding photographer was (still is) a student, but has had her own business going for about 2 years now. Her rate last fall was $200, which lasted about 2 hours and gave us a disc with all the rights to the photos. This year her rate is $300.

I say aroud $100 is great. Maybe 125.00 if you feel they did really great.

We just hired a photojournalism student (also an art double-major) last night to do our e-pics next weekend. We’re paying her $100 for 2 hours, and that includes editing. She said she’ll do cool photoshop things to some of the pictures, if we’d like. Stuff like this (first photo): http://www.dinofaphotography.com/blog/index.php/2010/01/cool-modern-engagement-photos-nj/
