I contacted a friend of a friend about hair & makeup because I saw her work on my friend (non-wedding look). She is offering to do a no obligation free hair & makeup trial. I am not sure if I’m going to book her. She has experience doing wedding hair & makeup (not sure how much experience) but doesn’t have a portfolio yet. She is probably offering for free to build her portfolio. I don’t know what her prices are for the full service and I’ve never met her before. Do I give a tip? How much? This would be my first hair & makeup trial so don’t know how the process works.

I would tip something at least. Since you’re helping her out regarding building a portfolio ( I did the same with my photog), I think anything would be appreciated. If she has to travel, cover that & whatever else you’re comfortable with.

Does she have her rates posted online? I would at least cover 15% of that.

I would tip for sure. I would say minimum $25 for the trial. She may be doing your hair and makeup for free but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have costs.

Thank you for all the tips (har har =P)! She doesn’t have her rates posted anywhere and I didn’t ask what she normally charges. I’ll be traveling to her. My friend (not the one who knows the makeup / hair artist) suggested getting a small gift since I don’t know how much full service would cost. What do you think?
