@mnp:  such a good question……I’m interested to see the other answers. We also decided to tip only after seeing the photos— otherwise, how can we know if they got the shots we asked and if we are satisfied. But from reading some other posts, I gather tha a lot of ppl tip at the wedding, before seeing photos.

Sadly, our photog promised us photos on Oct. 23rd, and we still haven’t gotten any after 1 email and 2 phone calls that he has ignored. We paid this guy several thousands of dollars so I’m very happy we didn’t tip yet (not sure we will now).

Honestly, it he doesn’t get us our photos and video in a timely manner, for the amount if money we paid, I will not hesitate to take him to small claims court.

I would say people use/like 10-20% of the photos for an album, prints around the home, or whats uploaded on facebook or the like.

Tipping is not necessary, its a nice gesture but certainly dont think you have to. Best thing to do if you’re happy is leave a nice review on Google. A review is the best “tip” you can give.

We tipped about $200 (on a $2300 bill), but we used a very dear and professional friend. Most photographers do not expect a tip. I like ALL the photos but chose about 60% to go into my album, since many pics were nearly repeats of the same moment.

Generally, you don’t tip the vendors who own their own business, which photographers usually fall under.

@LBPhotography: I hear that! I have very few reviews but loads of nice emails, cards, and, the occasional tip in a card.. I have none on a wedding board! They say they will but they dont and Im not going to pester them. Life gets busy..

If you tip anyone, hook up any food/bar vendors, extra for the staff. They usually include it but I worked in that business for a long time so extra is really nice in that area.

Yes, rule of thumb if you own the company you dont need to tip.
