Just curious, how much did you pay for movers? (Not packers, too). Last time Darling Husband and I moved we found a great deal and paid $300 to move a 1 bedroom apartment. Please tell me how large your apartment/home is, how far you moved, and how much it cost.
We are moving from a bedroom to a house, and I am trying to budget how much I think we’ll need.

I moved from a 2 bed/2 bath apartment to a 3 bed/2 bath house for $125. I found some licensed and insured movers off of craigslist. Great deal! I hate moving and paying for movers.

Our move is going to cost way more than that, but it’s across several states (not sure how far yours were?). Fortunately the movers are part of the startup package included in my contract for my new job.

The cheapest rate I’ve gotten is $115/hour. That includes 3 men and a truck. We will be moving from a 3 bedroom house….to some other house, but haven’t found a house yet! I am so tired of moving ourselves, and would love to hire someone if we have the money left to.

We always just recruit a few friends and rent a U-Haul for one of the days we move.
We’re moving from a one bedroom apartment (with two storage lockers) to a three bedroom house, but it’s only 20 minutes from where we live now, so I’ll load up our SUV and take a couple trips on my own, and hopefully have only one trip with a smaller-sized U-Haul/

@MrsTVLover: call around and get some quotes. each area is different. price will also depend on distance.
every time i’ve used a mover it’s been from 3 or 4 bed houses so it’s always been over $1000. yours shouldn’t be anywhere near that.

- Wedding: October 2011 - Bed & Breakfast
We moved from a 4 bedroom home with storage shed to our new home about 35 minutes away and the cost was $1500 for a 5 man crew, 2 full size moving trucks, and an auxillary truck. It was some of the best money we ever spent. They got us loaded, moved, and unloaded in 9 hours without damage to any of our family antiques or electronics. There is simply no way we could have done it ourselves, particularly seeing as I broke my ankle 4 days before the move. We provided them coffee/donuts for breakfast, lasagna/bread/salad for lunch, and tipped each guy $50 (so $250 total for tip). One of my ex’s worked for a moving company, so I knew from their perspective that if you take good care of your movers they will return the favor. We have some precious (to us) family heirloom pieces, so we wanted to be sure that our movers took good care of us. 🙂

Ours was $480 for 4 hours and a 2 bedroom apartment. It was really high I think but it saved us a lot of work.

Last time we paid for it it was a 2 bedroom, moved to a new town about 15 minutes away and it cost $300 plust we tipped the guys. Found them on Craigslist and I doubled checked their insurance and licenses. It was 2 guys and one truck.
This time it was across country and work paid for it.

I just moved to FI’s house…since this was my 5th move in 7 years, I sucked it up and hired movers rather than go the U-Haul/friends & family route. To move all my stuff out of a 3-level, 1400-sq. ft. townhouse (so, two beds/mattresses, two couches, two armchairs, a bench, a dresser, a desk, lots of accent tables/bookcases/lamps/etc.) and into FI’s house 10 miles away took a little over 3 hours with a crew of 3 dudes, and cost me ~$800. I did all the packing myself. If we had really shopped around I’m sure we could have found something cheaper, but it’s prime moving season in our area (Northern VA) and these guys were efficient and careful. Nothing was broken or lost, the whole thing came in under the estimate, and they even found and packed up for me some toys that my dog had ‘hidden’ under furniture throughout the house 😛
ETA: That amount included tipping all three guys, plus buying an extra mattress storage bag from them when we couldn’t find a place for the second bed.

We are also moving from a bedroom to a house. We plan to move ourselves getting a Uhaul and inviting some of our friends over with a case of beer as payment 🙂
