I used to be a wedding photographer. I make more money doing a corporate job and it’s because I want my weekends back to have a family. In fact, looking at my dozens of photographer friends, I’m pretty sure that unless their spouses have a cushy job, I am relatively on a better financial position than many of them. The prices are high because we can’t do more than one wedding a day so scaling up is expensive, each wedding takes a lot of work, and there are high operating costs. And you have to adjust for cost of living. A photographer in a big city with thousands of dollars of rent is not going to charge hundreds to shoot a wedding. That is unsustainable.

In general in the US I would say there are bands of pricing. There are beginner / student photographers. Then there are photographers with some experience aka up and coming. Then there are ones who are legitimate making a full time living. And then there are the celebrity photographers who get multiple inquiries a day so they can charge a high premium as they are well in demand.  It’s usually a 500-1000 difference to go from one band to the next. Then if you want albums those cost extra. In general, though there are exceptions, you get what you pay for. Go with someone who works well with you, has a full wedding you like, and fits your budget.

Annapolis, MD area. The decent photographers around here start at $3,500 for the bare minimum not including engagement session, albums, etc. Ours is probably going to be around $4,000-$4,500 when all is said and done.

We are paying $1950, but that includes 8 hours of coverage on our wedding day, an engagement session, rights to all of our photos, an online gallery as well as a USB drive with all images, and a personalized guest book for our reception with photos from our engagement session. We are in Orlando, FL.

We got a great deal for our area! We’re paying $3400 for engagement photos, 2 shooters on the wedding day, for as many hours as we’d like. We also get all digital files online and on a USB and rights to all the photos. Oh, and we’re getting married in Boston.

Im from BC, Canada. We are paying $2,900 for 9 hours, 2 photographers, an engagement session, CD with all photos (edited), web gallery, and a photo album. VERY happy with the price. There were 3 other potentials I had looked at. 2 of them were $3,600 (one did not include an engagement session OR files of the photos), and the other one was 8k.

Photographers aren’t cheap, but that is one thing that I am willing to invest more money into.<br />I can only imagine how stressful it would be to photograph a wedding, let alone edit the 1,000 images….

1,600 for two photographers (one of which is a student) on the day and our engagement shoot. Our photographer is fairly young and starting out. Her pictures are beautiful though. Most of the others in the Western North Carolina area cost 2,000-4000.

planningaway:  I live in NYC, getting married in NJ just outside of Manhattan. Our photographer is $1,400 but his normal starting rate is $4,300.

I saved money because I’m having a small wedding on a Thursday. Photographers are VERY willing to give you a good deal if you get married on an “off” day.

I actually studied photography in college so it was a major factor for me. I specifically chose to get married on an “off” day so that I could get a higher caliber photographer. I would never have been able to afford his normal rate. Just something to consider.

Seattle – $2800 (paying by cash we got a 5% discount) for:

-Engagement session

-2 photographers

-Full day coverage, 10+ hours

-All photos edited and complete access

-Guest book with images from engagement session

-2 albums

Also, most importantly, she’s really GOOD.  I did so much research – their websites, reviews on Wedding Wire (highly recommend), emails .. we met with 3 and felt the most comfortable with her.  We could’ve gotten $2200 for all of that stuff, but I wasn’t as confident in the guy’s skill.

just an idea for cutting costs- my friend couldn’t afford her photographer stay the entire night so she put disposable cameras on every table, the guests took photos all night and honestly they turned out a lot more varied and intimate(sweet). I’ve seen professional wedding pics and since the photographer doesn’t know the guests well they don’t always get the most sentimental pics, my friend really cherishes the little moments everyone captures on the cameras

michellia:  I see we are month twins!  would you mind sharing the name of your photographer (assuming you are not getting married the weekend of 16th lol)? I live on the east coast but for someone so psyched about their craft it might be worth travel fees!
