Our photographer normally charges $5,000 but gave us a deal because he knows one of my bridesmaids and we went to high school with him.

I think cost of photographer really depends on where you’re located.

I’d definitely go with a pro. I find that friend “photographers” are usually older people who just have a camera and really don’t have any vision or resources. They don’t back up their photos so they may be lost, also they probably don’t have good editing software.

Do you have the option to book the photographer hourly? For us, it came down to having a cheap photographer for the whole day or a more expensive one for half the day. We choose the latter.

Our photography package cost just under 4k. We often wondered if it was going to be worth it. Now that the wedding is over and we’ve seen some pictures, we agree that it was the BEST 4k we’ve ever spent. Here’s a link to the thread on my pics: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/our-surprisingly-cinematic-pro-pics

If you splurge on good photography you won’t regret it!

Spend the extra money for the better photographer, after all is said and done the only thing left once the wedding is over is the photos!

    My photography package is $1,900 but we received a 10% discount since we are having our wedding in the winter, which brought our total with tax to $1,710. This includes the following;

    1. 8 hours of coverage the day of the wedding.

    2. Unlimited color previews in a leather bound album (every photo taken the day of our wedding will be in this album and we get to keep it)

    3. Designer album with 20 sides of our choice, this is the album where the photos are actually scanned onto the pages of the album.

    4. One 16 x 20 framed portrait of our choice.

    5. Engagemnt Pictures

Our photographer is costing us $800 which included our engagemtn session, 10 hours on the day an album (of our choice) with all photo’s, a CD and full rights to all of the pictures taken on the day.

She is also including a bouidor photoshoot for me with a photobook to give my Fiance as a gift the day of our wedding (for his eyes only of course) 🙂

Where is your venue? Does it have a preferred vendor list? I went with mostly preferred vendors for our venue, #1 being the photographer because first of all, they know my venue (which has beautiful grounds/gardens and so I knew they are familiar with when/where to get the best shots, even down to the sunset/night pics and what angles are best with all the flowers) and second if you use a preferred vendor linked to your venue, you have the vendor held accountable to the venue and they don’t want to screw up their business relationship with the venue.  Our photogs actually did the albums the venue (The Swan Club) uses to advertise so I knew I was pretty safe. Additionally, you probably won’t get overcharged and may even get a discount for using a preferred vendor.

As for saving $ cutting corners, I DIY’d our invitations and Save the Dates (saving $5000), our menus and programs, our centerpieces (saving $4000 in florist costs) and a bunch of other things.  So I more than cut enough corners to pay for the photographer. You can do it, and you deserve to splurge on the photograpy–believe me you will be happy! I don’t know one person that didn’t regret cheaping out on that.  Like PPs said, people might not notice some corner cutting but you will forever have your pics.

Oh and our costs were about $3150 (included tax) for

    • 1-40 image album up to 8×10 size
    • 2-12 picture 5×7 parent albums
    • 1-11×14 portrait
    • 3-8×10 portraits
    • all proofs
    • 100 thank you prints
    • 10 hrs of coverage–plus the photog came to the hotel where we got ready, did pics there and in the limo and then they came to our house the day after to get some pics because we had a special item that they loved and wanted shots with it set up at our house

This price is really good for New York by the way.

wow – the prices up here are much higher for the better photogs in my area….I was ecstatic to get my photographer for $3100

But I’m also of the opinion that photos are the few things you will treasure from your wedding forever (flowers die, etc)

So i say go for it!

We spent more than I’d wanted (2300) but I really like our photographer and excited to work with him (E session this weekend and excited!).  I really would advise against going with your mom’s ex!  You need someone to be 100% focused on you and your wants and I doubt this person could do that.  Also, you’re not even impressed with his pics so even $500 is too much to spend on that particular photographer!

We are splurging on photo/video. Together, with the albums, photo & video is just over 6,000. It is a lot, but photo was important to us and we wanted to go with someone we really loved. So I say tosplurge.
