The first girl in my college “group” who got married had us in Jim Hjelm gowns that cost over $400 for the two of us who had column skirts (the ballgown and a-line skirts cost LESS!).  Since then, everyone’s gotten much more reasonable!

I’m going to tell my ladies to pick J. Crew dresses.  I live near the J. Crew headquarters and they have a store (not a factory outlet) where we can often get those party dresses at a big discount. 🙂

My dresses are $90. They are convertible dresses from etsy, so I think the shipping is an additional 10.  I felt very strongly about the girls not spending a lot and getting a dress they could actually wear again (seriously, I own the dress already).

my dresses are all mixed from Dessy. in bridal stores they go in the low $200 range. on netbride.com we got them for about $90 – $120 plus shipping (which was reasonable).

as for the extra fabric, i know it sux they charge for it, but one of my girls is bigger too and she paid hers.  she already knew she would because of a wedding she was in last year and the same thing happened.

$99 from David’s Bridal.  It’s not my favorite place, but they do have a lot of Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses at really reasonable prices.  If I had my way, I would have picked a Jim Hjelm Bridesmaid or Best Man dress that cost almost 3x as much.  But, I have to keep everyone else in mind and the $99 dress will work just fine 🙂

All my girls are young and have to travel to nyc for the wedding so i needed to keep the cheap. Got an adorable off the rack dress that was originally $140 for $40! I’m paying for them myself so the girls dont have to.

Your dress prices aren’t over the top, but definitely pricy IMO. Our Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses were no more than $150. That’s the price range that I like, but if your girls are fine with paying the $188 then that should be fine. I would let them know if they need help, you are willing. But I wouldn’t tell them exactly how much you would help out. Just do it on a case by case basis. I wouldn’t pay the $40 for my plus size Bridesmaid or Best Man. As mean as that sounds, and as mean as it is to charge more, I just wouldn’t pay the extra amount unless she couldn’t pay it herself (like every other BM). Sometimes giving people special treatment actually puts them on the spot, and gives them a reason to feel wronged, if you know what I mean. (If not, ask).

I’ve been in 4 weddings.  Two of them, the bride paid for the dress, the other two were 135 and 145 from davids.  If your girls cant make a $188 payment a month from now, it doesnt sound like their financial situation is too good and I think that is too much to ask them to pay, even if you cover the discount they would have gotten.  There are a lot of cheaper options like PP suggested or maybe off the rack at dept stores.  My BM’s are reusing dresses they all had from being in another mutual friends wedding, and I helped pick it since I have the same one so I do like it (the 135 one)  They have the money to spend on a new dress, but I still didnt want to make them do that when they already have a dress hanging there from another wedding that would likely never wear again.

Mine came from The Limited and were originally $89, but my Maid/Matron of Honor Googled around and found everybody a 20% off code. I really wanted to keep them as affordable as possible because I knew the odds that any of them would ever wear a pale green dress again are pretty slim. I decided I’d feel OK about either a more expensive but re-wearable dress or a less expensive one-time-only dress! Although once they started arriving, they’ve all said it’s a dress they think they’ll actually wear again, so it worked out really well:

Ultimately, your ladies are the ones who know if it is too expensive or not. Mine were originally $215 + shipping, but I timed it with a coupon code and free shipping promo so they ended up being $160 altogether. They are basic black dresses that my ladies insist they’ll wear again, though. Three of my bridesmaids would completely OK with spending that or more, but I would not have felt comfortable asking them to go too much higher. I also had a difficult time becaue I found a lot of dresses in that price range but the plus size surchage put them over the top, and my plus size Bridesmaid or Best Man is the one who was the least comfortable paying that amount so I avoided those dresses. I should have just went with the one I liked and paid the extra for her like you’re doing. I think that if you can afford it, that’s a nice gesture. It is ridiculous how designers do that!

I actually let my Bridesmaid or Best Man pick.  They got to pick between 3 different ones from a designer or to get them custom made…the prices for the 3 were between 134-280, and the custom made dresses cost $200 total, including 2 fittings and alterations.

They picked the custom made 200 dollar ones! They went with a higher priced one because they know it will fit them perfect, plus, they truly will wear them again!

The dresses I’m considering are from Aria, and are $200. I think that’s a little pricey, so I’m probably going to contribute $50 for each of the girls’ dresses.  $150 is in line with what I’ve had to pay for the weddings I’ve been in.

Ours were $189…  I have been a bridesmaid many, many times and the dresses are always hovering around $200….  Now its payback time!

Mine were $110 with a discount that I got. Orginally $146. The Weddingshoppeinc.com and heartstringsbridal.com are both actually stores in Minnesota and they often have bm dress sales. It might be worth looking into!
