The vet i took my cat to the other day told me i should have one extra litter pan per number of cats. So that means you should have two pans if you have one cat, three pans if you have two cats, etc.
Also, she said you should be scooping the litter twice a day.
I was wondering if everyone adheres to these guidelines or not?
I put several poll options, but obviously it doesn’t cover every possibilty. Just wanted to get an idea and hear some responses.

Oops I didn’t vote on how many pans. We have 3 and 2 cats. They are dumb.
And we scoop twice a day usually unless I smell something particularly foul.

I don’t have a cat, but when my mom did, she would buy the Arm&Hammer clumping litter. She would scoop it as soon as our cat would use the litter box. So seeing her do it led me to do so as well.

We only have 1 cat and he in indoor/outdoor. He is very much like a dog and wants to be let out to use the restroom. If it is winter though or storming he will used his litter box. Ours is automatic and we check it every few days to see if we need to change the litter or change the thing that the poo goes into.

I have two litterpans, two cats, and scoop at minimum 2 times a day. Sometimes 3 or 4 if my kitten Shadow is being particularly stinky. My older cat Dusty is VERY picky about a clean box too and will pee outside of it if it isn’t clean enough. Needless to say they create very good motivation to stay on top of it!

One cat, one litterbox, once a day. He usually only goes at night, around 7 PM so there is no need to do it more than once.

I have 3 cats and my vet said you need one pan for every two cats, so we have two pans. I scoop everyday after work, and once every couple weeks I dump the whole thing out and start over.

I scoop once a day, one cat, one litter pan. He only usually goes the once per day, if he goes more than that then i would scoop that also.

4 cats and 8 boxes. Hubby scoops every 2nd day.

lol, i would love to show the vet i saw these responses! especially the poll results since as of right now, no one has voted they have more litter pans than number of cats!
we have two cats and one pan and scoop once a day. I would actually like to have two pans for them, but our apt is small enough that we already have trouble finding a good spot for the one pan, i can’t imagine having to put two in here! we did get the largest one available.
@ElwoodBlues: we also dump the whole thing every couple of weeks and scrub the pan clean again.

@andielovesj: wow, 8 boxes! i spoke too soon in my last comment! do you have to scoop all 8 boxes every day?

We have one cat, she’s 14, her litter box is in the bathroom, and when I’m home, I scoop it any time I go in there & see she’s used it. She likes it clean, I always tell my guy, well you flush everytime, how would you like if you had to depend on someone else to flush for you. She has a large litter box, and we have an extra one for if we’re away overnight & can’t be home to scoop as often as we do.

@Vidya: Ditto! I say “oh I should clean the box today”, but it is covered, so I don’t see it and out of sight, out of mind…
I’m surprised they haven’t gone in other places to voice their displeasure.

I scoop either everyday or every other, depending on if it needs it. We have only one cat & one litter box.
