To be honest, I wasn’t even sure what you meant by “reconcile your checking.” hahaha I’ve never done this. I only write checks when paying private service providers that don’t take credit cards, like the gardner, handy man, cleaning lady. And then it’s usually only a few hundred dollars at most. So no matter when they deposite the check there will always be money in the account to cover a few hundred dollars.
I look at my accounts on line about twice a month just to make sure there are no abnormalities and to get an idea of my balance. Otherwise, I don’t really pay too much attention day to day.

lol well it’s a measure of how I didn’t know what “reconcile your books” meant that I don’t do this obviously 😛

I get paid weekly, and Fiance is bi-monthly, so I reconcile our accounts each week. Granted my degree is in accounting, so for me it’s easier than most, and I spend maybe 5-10 min per week on it, but still– it’s important to me that I always know exactly where we are at financially.

We use online banking and the YNAB budgeting tool to track our spending. We go through it weekly to make sure everything matches up. Like PPs Fiance and I rarely ever write checks so it’s mostly just to make sure there are no weird or double charges on our account and to check how well we’re doing with our budget.

I’m along the same lines as the PP for the most part, I don’t write a ton of checks so I don’t pay too much attention. I check my account online weekly, and I can get a sense of if the checks cleared or whatnot. For my job I write a lot of checks and do a lot of transfers, so I have to balence everything out to the penny daily – I have a document and write down when the check was written, and check it off once it is cleared.
My Mother-In-Law a while back wrote a check and then a few weeks later closed he bank account. When the check bounced the bank had all her accounts frozen – it was a very extreme response, I think the person got fired who did that….
