My ring has a lifetime warranty on it and with that comes a cleaning and “check up” that im allowed to do every six months. They will shine it up and check the prongs and smaller stones to ensure its still in good shape, if a stone is missing they will replace it, and if for some reason it needs to be sized I can take it in at any time as many times as i need to to have it sized. I was wondering how many of you actually take your rings in like this? I fully plan on taking advantage of this. Im super paranoid with my ring, but im thinking thats because its still so new. I have only been engaged for a week and I take it off when I shower, do dishes, clean, cook, sleep, put lotion on, and I usually wear it mostly while I am out of the house. I do wear it at home but I find that I am taking it off for things that I may not need to. Am I being overly cautious here bees? I mean maintenance every six months and being psycho over taking off my ring, is this normal ? or can I ease up on things.

I bring mine in to get it cleaned usually once a month, and every six months is how often they say I should bring it in to get everything checked, but if they’re not busy, they usually check it out when I bring it to get it cleaned.
For what it’s worth, my rings are white gold, and I used to take mine off for everything too because I was afraid of it “turning” sooner because of lotion and soaps and things. My jeweler said that the only thing that can affect that is really harsh chemicals, like chlorine. She said lotion and soap won’t hurt it. So I rarely take mine off anymore. Mainly bc it’s not worth it to me to misplace it or lose it. And the couple of times that I took them off to wash my hair, and accidentally left them on the side of the bathtub, my husband hid the from me. Which was cruel, but it taught me a lesson:) So unless we’re going swimming in the pool, or I have to put chlorine tabs in the pool, then these puppies stay on!

I am always checking my ring myself periodically – at least once a month. I take it to my ear and tap it to see if I hear any movement. I have been engaged a little over two years now, and I’ve had to send it in to be tightened at least 5 times. Taking it off for certain activities will certainly help extend the life of your ring and the time between prong tightenings.
You’re not alone in your ring paranoia. I had to resize my ring when we got engaged, so I was always afraid it would slip off and I’d lose it. I’m always super careful when wearing it now, and I often check my ring to make sure the stone is still there, haha. I always take mine off for a shower, washing dishes, and doing any kind of work with my hands (I’m prone to hit it on things – bad hand-eye coordination!).
I’d say if you’re not checking your own ring regularly, definitely keep to the schedule of bringing it in every 6 months. Even if it doesn’t need tightened, the cleaning will make it look FABULOUS, and if you’re close by to the jeweler and can get that for free.. I say why not?! 🙂
Oh, and CONGRATS on your engagement!!!

Mine comes with unlimited warrnty for one year and I am suppose to bring it in every 3 months for the first year for a “check up”. We bought extra warranty which was only $300 for the lifetime. Which includes check up once a year, free plating every free year and free size adjustment and should any of the small stones fall out they replace for free.

Usually the maintenance plan is tied to a warranty, meaning that you need to get the prongs checked to keep the warranty valid. So, check into that!
My new rings do not have prongs at all, so I am not going to worry about “regular maintenance” (and they are very low maintenance anyway, bezel, flush set, and brushed finish), but my old rings with a 4-prong-set centre stone (flush set accents) I took them in 1-2x a year to get checked. It does not take long, and they would usually clean them for me. My rings were ordered via online retailer, so I just found a great local jeweler to do this for me.
I think it is good to take it off for the things you have mentioned. I never wear my rings while working with tools, gross things, chemicals, working out at gym (weights), putting on lotions/sunblock, usually not while running everyday (for sunblock factor, but also I have tripped a couple times even on treadmill at gym and do not want to bang them hard!), in the ocean on vacation, while showering, sleeping, etc. I do wear them at home, but take them off for anything where there is either risk of damage to them or my finger, or just risk of gross gunk getting on them. And again, I plan to continue this even with far lower maintenance rings! Also a good reason to clean them while they are off of my hand! I clean them about 2x a week.
I do not take them off if I am just washing my hands.
I have a couple designated spots (ringholders) in the house I put them if I take them off (I never just take them off and leave them anywhere!) and if I need to take them off out of house, I have a ringholder at work, as well as a chain that holds a pendant that I slip them on. You can also get a specific ring holder pendant – check out AloraLocks on Etsy – to clip them on if you take them off while out of the house for any reason.

My fiance likes to pay his monthly bill in person, so we hit the jeweler once a month and they always shine the ring up and double check things. Like others, my warranty calls for a six-month check-up, which amounts to pretty much the same thing only with paperwork being signed.
After the ring is paid off in September, we’ll probably go every three months for a cleaning/check-up (and to browse the new jewelry!).
I was super careful with my ring for the first month or two, then it just became the norm…last week I was making cupcakes and dying icing and after it was all over I realized I still had my ring on (typically I don’t allow dye of any type near the ring)…but all was good!

@best10612: this is optional. The warranty is valid even if you do not bring it in every six months for a check up. I made sure to ask this when we were at the store and the warranty options were being explained to us. 🙂
@balex122: thank you! im still on cloud nine!
@balex122: thank you for the congrats! I am close to the jeweler and all of the work and cleanings are done in the shop so even for resizing and check ups or tightenings, it doesnt matter, it will all be done right in store since their shop is on site.
@mkim: this sounds almost like the warranty I have.
@RayKay: I only have a ring holder in my bathroom and in the kitchen, I use the ring box at night and leave that on my night table on my side of the bed. I would not be able to leave it anywhere I am super afraid of it falling somewhere (drain, floor vent, etc) and im also afraid ill forget where it is. I have had the ringjewelry holders in those places forever though since I am horrible with costume jewelry. Like little studs and rings and stuff. When I go to shower I would take em off and never see em again. so now the sole purpose of them is the e ring 🙂

@best10612: Yep that’s my warranty too – only valid if I bring it in every 6 months. I’ve been married 1.5 years and this is the first time I’ve ever had to send it in for loose prongs – I’m just grateful they do all the work for free and heading in 5 minutes every 6 mo is worth it!

I have to take mine in every March & September. (6 months) which is okay now but for the rest of my life?! AH! If I do it will replace any diamond I lose, even my center stone for free. I get it cleaned each time too.

I have a a lifetime six-month check up plan (I call it a tune-up!). It includes being cleaned, resized (up or down two sizes), tightened, etc. They sign off on it and if any work is done by an outside store, the warrenty is void. I’ve been taking mine off when I do the dishes and shower, but otherwise, it stays on all them time. My Fiance is going to get me a Lennox ring holder for those times.

sounds like you got ur ring from zales?..am I right?..lol my ring is to be inspected every 6 months as well…and it’s just my “norm” to be what you call “paranoid” …i take off my ring for many things, washing dishes/hands, cooking, cleaning with certain products, showering. My Mother-In-Law is always making fun of me for being that way and says that I need to just get over cuz i’m gonna end up losing my ring b/c i take it off for every lil thing…but i can’t help it…glad to know now that i’m not the only one!

I was paranoid when I first got mine and sometimes in the night I would freak out and think it wasn’t on my finger. I always wear it, because for me, I was more worried about losing it than having it on and… possibly banging it or something. Now I am adjusted to being more careful with that hand, but I always wear it. Except in a pool, that is really bad for gold!
I think if you have the maintenance included, why not?
