So Bees- give me your opionion! If you have children (or don’t) or even if you just like telling people what to do- how often do you think a child should have their room redecorated?
I grew up in a home where we re painted our rooms every couple of years. Darling Husband grew up in a home where all rooms were white/beige with no individuality at all.
Its been 3 1/2 years since I re-did the rooms of my 2 girls and we are itching to do it again! But my husband thinks we are nutty. To be clear, I am talking new paint and curtains, but no new furniture.
Time is not a concern as I am a Stay-At-Home Mom, and I plan to spend under $200 for both rooms, so not a big money concern either.
What do you do for your kids, or what did your parents do in their house when you were growing up?

My parents didn’t let us redecorate, but they also decorated everything in a kind of timeless way that had personality but wasn’t very obviously for any specific age (ie, no bright primary coloured walls or movie/cartoon characters on the wall, etc). I don’t have kids yet, but I think I’ll do the same.

As a kid I think I had roughly four different stages that my room went through. My mom was a Stay-At-Home Mom, but she did all the painting, made things herself, etc. I loved being able to have a say in my room and it allowed me to exhibit my personality. Made the room my own, I guess.

My girls are 5 & 6 and they have had enough different rooms. They choose to share a room and this time they wanted a sky, clouds, rainbow, and flowers. We painted their room sky blue. My fiance built loft beds with built in desks underneath and painted them white for the clouds. They have a rainbow and flowers plus a sun. I am going to be changing it some and writing out the words to “You Are My Sunshine” as a border along the top. I have always sang that song to them and it is special to us. Plus it fits the theme too.

I changed my kids’ rooms whenever they requested it. When they were little, I changed them when I got bored with them, and that could have been every 2 years. Paint and new bedding is easy and gives a room new life, so I did it pretty often.
I never did theme rooms for them, ever, but did go with color themes. My oldest loved her black, white and red room (her request) up until she was 15 or so, so that room stayed the same for probably 4 or 5 years except for new bedding.
I’d just go ahead and do it since you’re home, especially if they want it. I never even discussed it first with mine, as I always did all the painting anyway.

Thanks for the opinions ladies! I especially want to let my 3 year old have a say in her room because hers is currently her sock monkey nursery theme from when she was born. She wants light blue walls with a rainbow/cloud mural.
