I was 22 when I got my teaching job. I got 2 degrees special education and Elementary  education. It took me 4.5 years to earn both degrees but I took no less than 20 credit hours every semester. (It was a ton of work) I also had to student teach for 2 semesters one for each of my degrees. In the end it was worth it because I LOVE my job!

I was 22 as well, and my first job was teaching high school. It took me four years to get my degree.

briaharris23:  I graduated college at 22, and worked for a teacher as a year. I didn’t major in education in college, and went through an alternative certification program. I was in a terrible situation (horrible administration), and completely burnt out on education – so I quit. I took a few years off and work at a non-profit, before I decided to go back to grad school for education.

I got my Master’s of Ed at 26. It took me a year (summer, fall, spring and another summer semester) and re-started my teaching career a few months later. I’m finishing up my first year back in a few weeks (I’m 27 now)!

Probably not helpful but I’m 32 and thinking about going into education. I’d be 37 when I graduate and 38 my first year of teaching and often think “are you crazy???!!” but it’s been a lifelong dream that just wont go away. (i’m also considering saying F’that, keeping my 9-5, majoring in business and branching into HR so you know, take my input with a grain of salt)

I started my MATESL (Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language) at 27 years old, and graduated 2 years later at 29. I have taught high school ESL ever since, in a large urban district just outside of Boston. I absolutely love what I do!!!

I started teaching when I was 35. I left work in social services to have my kids, then worked evenings and weekends until they were old enough to be a bit less reliant on me. Then I did a training course where I worked as a teacher while training for a year. I’m 42 now.
