Get properly sized! It’s your best bet. It should slide comfortably onto your finger, and a little harder to get off. By that I mean- you should be able to wave your hand like a maniac and have the ring go nowhere.

@LisaECole:  does it feel like it will fall off? shake your hand as if you have something stuck to it and you are trying to shake it off. does your ring feel a little risky? if you are still undecided, put some soap or oil on your finger and slip your ring on and off to see if you’d be in danger of losing it at a pool or something.

this is what we did for FI’s ring and decided it was too big.

The wedding band doesn’t change the size of the engagement ring, but since you wear the wedding band on the insde, the engagement ring gets pushed toward the knuckle slightly, and fingers are usually shaped in a way that the engagement ring being closer to the knuckle will be snugger.

I still think you should get it resized.  The man in the jewelry store told me that because engagement rings are top heavy, they spin around more and it’s better to go slightly smaller.  Most of my rings are a size 5, but my engagement ring is a 4.5.  I felt it was too tight at first, but then I got used to it.  It never bothers me, and never feels like it will slip off when I wash my hands in the winter.

@LisaECole:  Also, resizing is pretty cheap (if not free), so if you need to get it resized again after the wedding, you can 🙂

if it’s a huge size difference, it may compromise the stones, but a half size really shouldn’t.  DO TELL THE JEWELER TO CHECK PAVE STONES THOUGH. i got my ring resized twice, and the first time stones fell out (2!) because they didn’t check that they were all nice and tight. the second time it was resized, i made sure to say i had problems with it before, and they checked them and there were no loose stones.
