blt982: We got engaged in July and I started dress shopping in September after we had booked our venue. I waited until after we had our venue booked because we were looking at a variety of locations which were all very different whi h would affect the style of the wedding and my dress decision. Once we picked our venue, I knew the style direction we were going in so I started dress shopping for a dress I loved that would also fit the look of our wedding.

Bought my dress a month or so after my engagement. It was the first time dress shopping for me, we went just for fun and I ended up with a dress! Literally, the first thing I crossed off The list. Here’s my dress, can’t wait till my next fitting!

blt982: I was engaged on October 19th 2013, and first went dress shopping the weekend after Christmas (so the 27th and 28th of December). I probably might have gone looking earlier, but one of my maids of honour was studying abroad at the time, and so she hadn’t been in town between our engagement and Christmas.

I think you shouldn’t go until at least 8 months before your wedding. My sister bought hers right after she got engaged and two years before her wedding date…it was a horror! She decided she didn’t like it, wanted something else etc. we shopped some more it was awful! Finally she decided on her original pic (and looked magnificent) by my word it was trying. I bought my dress at the end of october for my march wedding

I was engaged February 2013. I started dress shopping in November 2014 with a wedding in June 2015 only to find out that is really late to start dress shopping!

engaged Januaryv1st 2014, booked venue 2 weeks later but didn’t go dress shopping until June as I was finishing grad school and went to India for 3 weeks. I even had to beg mom to go in June as she thought it was way to early for our May 2015 wedding.

I went 10 months later because I really wanted to wait to go with my mom and sister who live in my hometown, and that was the earliest I’d be back to go with them. We’re also having a 2 year engagement, so I didn’t want to go too early.

I personally did not go until we set a date. The first question every bridal shop will probably ask you as soon as you walk in the door is “So … When is your wedding?” They like to make sure they have enough time to order your dress and in case you would want a dress to “match” the season. But if you know your wedding is like a year out, I would start going whenever you want! It really is a lot of fun! Happy dress shopping!

We got engaged 1/1/2015 (at midnight!!) and I live in a city 5 hours away from my mother and sister. They are so very excited, but can’t make it down to go shopping for a few months yet. They also said I’m not allowed to try on dresses without them there (I’m the baby of the family so they want that special moment of seeing the very first time I try on a dress) but I might explode if i have to wait months to just try one on! Also I’m looking at getting a custom made dress from a local seamstress, so I want to get that started sooner rather than later, but I’d like to try on dresses before making an appointment.
I should just chill out, load up my Pinterest board with ideas, and hit the gym. Time will continue to march on and I will be trying on dresses in no time.
