We just got engaged after Christmas, and we set our tentative date as July 5, 2014. So…we’ve got a year and a half, and we are having the wedding back in our home state of Kansas (we live in NY). I’ve been looking at wedding websites and Pinterest and such for ideas every day since, but I figured there’s really not much we can start doing besides setting a date, budget, possible wedding party, and little stuff like that. And looking at possible venues, they don’t even reserve that far out. Is it too early to start putting a ton of thought and planning into it, or am I going to need to wait a couple months until I can start seriously booking and shopping and planning?

No reason you can’t look at venues now, so you’ll have that decision made by the time they do reserve. I’d hold off on the wedding party- seen too many drama stories on the Bee, of “I asked too soon and now I want to get rid of her.” Setting the budget’s a great idea.

I don’t think it’s too early to do those things. I’m on pretty much the same timeline as you (although I got engaged a year before!) and I just got a contract for our wedding venue. She didn’t question that it was almost a year and a half away but it’s a popular wedding spot so I wanted to make sure I got my date reserved. You can start planning in your head and with others, just don’t be disappointed when some vendors brush you off!
As much as I liked planning all the little details like table linens, it’s hard to do unless you have a date and a venue! So you can start seriously talking to venues, find out how fast they book up, and then all the little things will just fall into place.

I’m looking at August 2014, and have been talking to several venues. No one has told me that they don’t book that far out, though they do all have my date availible :). Right now I’m getting the overall idea of the wedding together and getting an idea of what I want for dress, flowers, ceterpieces ect. I’m also planning from afar, so more time to make trips back and stuff is giong to be helpful. I also plan on kinda moseying through the planning so it is less stressful. After I get the venue booked I’m probably not going to do anything for a bit besides enjoy my Fiance.

May 2014 is my date and I just started emailing beach hotels for proposals, it’s never to early to start.

The more time you have the better! You’ll be less stressed out and you’ll be able to spread your payments out a lot better. I’m surprised you can’t book your venue for 2014 in Kansas, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything. Absolutely look on pinterest and start collecting pictures that you love. After you get the venue, then move on to your dress.
