Hi ladies! My wedding is over a year away, but I want to start looking at dresses cause that’s the fun part, yes? I was wondering how soon is too soon to buy a dress. If I shop now and fall in love with something, am I still going to love it May 2010? How far in advance did you buy your dresses? How on earth do you hide them from your FH if he lives with you? What have you all done?
Thanks for the advice!

I’m not sure how soon is too soon. Are you a pretty decisive person with a set style that you tend to stick with? Do you know what you want and have always, or for a long time, wanted this? If so, I say buy when you find something you love!
I found my dress (first one I tried on) in October and KNEW it was the one. Yet, I waited till January to buy it cause everyone wanted me to "look around and make sure." Now, I won’t be getting my dress till a month before the wedding and that is making me a bit nervous!
I will be keeping my dress in my closet with strict orders that Fiance does not peek. I know he won’t cause he wants it to be a surprise but if you think he may be too tempted to look, see if you can store it at a friends or your parent’s house.
Happy dress hunting!

I think a year out is not too early to start looking. If you are buying through a bridal shop, a lot of places will suggest ordering 6-8 months out. I think, definitely go with the 8 month timeline! I ordered my dress in October, and it just came in this week! I only have 3 weeks for fittings before my wedding, so I feel like it was really close.
One thing you could start doing immediately is clipping pictures of dresses you like out of magazines. It makes it easier on you (and the shop attendants!) if you bring in some images of dresses/shapes/details that you like. Also, research cost of the dresses you like, so you aren’t stuck with sticker shock when you get to the salon.

I think a year out is PERFECT to start looking. I wish I’d started sooner! I’m sooo bummed about how long mine is taking. I bought my dress (a Maggie Sottero) from a reputable shop on August 16, 2008 and it has been 8 months – I still don’t have my dress! My wedding is on May 22nd this year, and supposedly I am getting it any day!
When i bought my dress, they told me I’d get it in February or March – well now it’s getting to be crunch time and I don’t like this stress! I really think 9 months to a year before your wedding is the best decision just to save yourself the anxiety.
I’m not a nasty person at all, but it’s getting to the point where I have to call my dress shop every week just to see where they are at. It’s no fun wondering when you’ll get your dress.

I started looking about a year out (more like 11 months) and bought 10 months out. I had my dress in hand just 2 months to the wedding but at least I wasn’t stressed about fittings!
I don’t think it hurts to start early especially if you are decisive! Good Luck!
