I think 14 months out is a fine time to order if you’re 100% sure, but maybe you should take advantage of the extra time and continue to look around. I think by the time you reach 12 months you can definitely order, as it just gives you more leeway with getting the dress in and getting all alterations done well in advance so you don’t have to wait until the last minute.

I agree with star_dust, 14 months is fine if you’re absolutely sure.

ETA: Most people have told me that I want to buy 8 to 12 months out to allow plenty of time for the dress to come in, have alterations and such without everything being at the last minute. I’m going next week, 12 months out from my wedding, with the full intention of buying something.

@diamondgal23:  I only had a 4 month engagement and I know that I am a major exception and not the rule. Most people, in my mind, have over a year, or at least a year to plan. And even on Say Yes to the Dress they say you should order 6-9 months ahead.

I would keep looking around! You have PLENTY of time!

And maybe it’ll be discounted when you go to buy the dress in another 6 months!

@diamondgal23:  22 month engagement here! I am going to look around the 15 month out mark, and hope to buy by 12 months to go. I suppose if I find my love by 15 months out, I might buy.. but definitely by 12 months out unless I don’t find something.

@diamondgal23:  Not really.. unless they’re selling it you as a sample because it’s not selling well because it’s an older style.

@diamondgal23:  I’ve been getting comments about our long engagement too (it’s not actually that long, it will be 15 months). But we live in Asia right now, and people seem to get engaged and then get married, like, the following month. Our engagement would have been shorter but we’re relocating internationally this year and both starting new jobs, and I can’t quite face wedding-planning on top of all that.

Back to your original question – I just bought my dress this week, and our wedding is March 2014. So, exactly 12 months out. It’s a Fall 2011 Vera Wang, and I’m getting it preowned so I didn’t want to risk leaving it too late and not being able to find my size and the condition I wanted it in.

Out wedding isn’t until Oct 2014 but i went shopping the weekend following our engagment. I found my dress then but decided to wait, 3 weeks later it went on sale for 50%. So I made a follow up appointment, tried on my dresses and still loved the one I tried the first time so I bought it!

I bought my dress already! I’m picky and dislike shopping. I love my dress and have no regrets about buying this early :). I know it is the one because the second I paid my deposit I have had no desire to see other dresses, and when I do, I compare them to mine. Lol. If you love it abd you’re ready to buy, I’d say go for it.

I’d keep trying on other dresses just to make sure. Tons of new gorgeous gowns are released all the time!
