    Of your two ideas, I prefer the shirt, although  I would not personalize it so they are more likely to use it again.

    There’s also nothing wrong with picking up the phone and speaking to them in person.

    I’m a fan of the consumption type gifts (food, beverage).  Something as specific as a shirt that says Matron of Honor on it will never be worn or used again.  Whereas a bottle of wine will be drinken!  I know somewhere in the back of my closet is a tank top that reads “Bridesmaid” from 8 years ago…

    I just spoke to her in person. Actually, I asked all of my briesmaids but one in person because she lives 3 hours away. She, I called, but she was pretty sure already she was going to be my bridesmaids. 😉
