You could do what I did at my 21st – I talked to the bar tender and asked him to secretely give me non alcoholic shots! Though I do agree you should feel comfortable saying no to drinks you dont want

I would personally never have shots. When I was a teenager (in Europe, so nothing illegal) and we had those highschool parties where you were supposed to drink, my trick was to get a glass of whiskey (straight, no ice) and walk around with it sipping a bit all night. The boys tended to be pretty impressed and noone was complaining that I didn’t drink.

I agree with eating a lot especially an oily type meal and drinking lots of water. However if you are like me and can’t take alcohol no matter how much you have practiced, regardless of how much you eat or drink water you will still become tipsy (drunk) just slightly slower. Realistically one can only drink that much fluids anyway, in the end you will just be drinking the alcohol forgoing the water. My, tried and tested, advice would be to buy activated charcoal capsules, taking two every four hours. You will not get drunk and you will also not have a hangover. If you would like to get a bit tipsy take one every four hours or two every six hours.

It’s perfectly reasonable to set some boundaries and decide that enough is enough at any time – that doesn’t make you a party pooper at all! But since that’s not what you asked…

I would highly highly recommend not mixing your drinks. Pick a category and stick to it. Beer is a good option for being able to drink more with lower alcohol content, wine is great for drinking more slowly but can add up pretty quickly. If you’re going to have mixed drinks and/or shots, stick to the same type of liquor as best you can (i.e. choosing things that are vodka based etc.).

Even if you can’t stick to one type of drink, maybe set a groundrule with your friends about only doing one type of shot throughout the night to ensure things don’t get too messy.

Try to eat a lot… something heavy like some pasta.

I would limit yourself to maybe 2 shots that night… make them count… big celebratory shots so everyone feels included and they are trying to all do shots with your individually.

I agree with the water in between each drink thing, but who wants to keep asking the bartender for waters. It helps, but there’s a weirdness about it.

I would stick to beer instead of liquor.
