When people ask just casually say, “khakis and a button down shirt are fine.”

I would do as the poster above suggested, and give people concrete examples of what semi-formal means to you. Make sure you (or a family member) explain it specifically to those family members who might not be in the know!

Our wedding had a semi-formal dress code, but my husband’s aunt showed up in jeans and t-shirt, and my aunt said “I’m wearing capri pants and a t-shirt, and you can’t stop me”. I just let it slide. Some people just can’t be convinced!

You could put on the invitations “semi-formal attire” or “casual attire”.

Dress slacks and a tie, no jacket for men and short dresses for the women.  That makes it pretty clear that jeans aren’t welcome.  But they will likely wear what they want anyways…

i thought family and subtle never mixed 🙂

although you can ask for smart wear you cant control what people will wear.. worse case senario you might end up on lamebook like this (check out the guy in the tee in the background)

I can’t recall which bee it was, but she had a hilarious page on her wedding website of ‘what not to wear.’ All sorts of humorous examples. I’m going to need to track that down as well, like you said, each family has that special someone 🙂

Just say “Black Tie Optional”. lol. or “Formal Attire”. Everyone get take that was they want, but if you want your guests in suits and dresses, then you need to be clear. “Semi-Formal” is too broad. And if anyone says anything just say your venue has a dress code.
