I would tell her that while you love the necklace and appreciate it, you tried it on with the dress and it just doesn’t work, so you plan on wearing it for xyz event instead. If you are doing a rehearsal dinner, I would suggest wearing it to that.

Just talk to her and tell her what you are battling.  If she is reasonable, she will completely understand and calm your worries.

Tell her that the necklace is really special to you, and that you would like to wear it the night of the rehersal.

@miss11.11.11: 🙂 you said it with significantly less commas. I am comma crazy. At work I go through and reread my emaisl to take about half out but with weddingbee I get way too lazy.
