My fiance just started the process of changing his last name. His siblings and mother all have different last names, due to cultural reasons, but now they all want to change their last name to his grandfather’s last name, to “unite” their family.
We are getting married in less then 40 days, on May 25, 2012.
Assuming that his name won’t be changed in time for the weddding… I am sort of at loss for how to change my last name. i wouldn’t be able to put his new last name on the app/certificate if it isn’t his legal name yet, right? Should I just indicate that I am keeping my maiden name and once his last name is legally changed, legally go and change my last name to his new last name? Or should I just skip this waiting mess and start the name change process now, instead of waiting for the marriage, and change my last name to his future last name?
Hope that made sense…

@natmary89: It will be a LOT easier for you to change your last name to match his after the wedding takes place. Changing your last name because you got married is fairly simple – you just need your marriage license and your current id. Changing your last name just because you want to change it is a lot more complicated, as I’m sure you’ve seen since your Fiance is going through that process. Do you have any sort of timeframe on when his name change will go through?

In most states, you put your maiden name on the license. The license is not the name change document so it doesn’t matter that your new name isn’t on there. But as courtney said, wait until after his name is finalized to change yours. You might need to get an amended marriage license in order to do this since they usually look at his name on the license in order to determine what your name should be.
