I don’t know how to deal with it, but I am in the same boat! MrMojito only smiles in pictures when he’s drunk. I’m not sure that’s the best option!

The best pictures I’ve managed to get were when his sister-in-law was making faces while she took the pictures. Maybe you can say something goofy to him, or make a funny face just before the picture is taken? You might try poses where you two are looking at each other instead of the camera. He might be more likely to smile at you! Or try a candid shoot, with the two of you just interacting together with some props or something. A lot of the pictures from that sort of thing will probably be rubbish, but you should get some good ones too.

We haven’t done our engagement shoot yet, but those are the things I’m probably going to try.

@raziel1687:  Shoot them like you guys are in a noir gangster film?

He will look debonair. 🙂

It may not be so bad. Pictures that look like you guys are talking or being sweet can be better than forced smiles anyway.

@raziel1687:  I would skip the posed, portrait-type shots altogether and try to have a little fun with it! I hate having to stand and pose and smile at the camera because my fake/forced smile is AWFUL, and you can always tell that I don’t mean it.

Maybe some shots like these (stolen from google images, lol):

@raziel1687:  I think the best way to go about it is have a really good time.  Laugh and tell any inside jokes that would get him to smile.  If you and the photographer and relaxed and having a good time, FI will have to smile at some point!

Some of the best photos from my engagement session occured when my fiance and I were goofing off and laughing. This one is particulary my favorite:

This was taken right after the photographer asked one of us to make the other laugh….so I shouted out “PENIS” at the top of my lungs.

I agree with previous posters, if he doesn’t like to smile but you want some photos with smiling, maybe do less photos that are posed, and more that are relaxed and candid. You might get some good results. Also, a good photographer knows how to capture their subjects in the best possible way, so trust that your photog will capture your fiance at his finest 🙂

My SO hates having his picture taken and often makes silly faces to avoid smiling. Like @PermaStudent:  suggested, we ended up skipping the posed shots almost entirely and just let our friend photograph us as we acted normally/hung out. I will admit that it was a bit awkward at first (especially for me), but I absolutely love how our pictures turned out.

Some of my favorites –

Natural shots are the way to go. We picked our photographer solely on the fact that he is AMAZING at candid shots. None of the pictures of our e-shoot was posed, so we felt like we were on a date.

same here.  we’ve been togther pushing 9 years and there were no photos of us that anyone other than us would want to frame.  we only had the photos done 2 weeks ago so I don’t have them back to post but we were blogged so you can see them http://alleycatphotography.ca/blog/2013/05/adam-katherine-engaged/ if you like.  They came out pretty well IMO.
