Besides the tips already given,

specifically with airfare I would keep your options open as to which city you fly into. Do a little market research and figure out which city is cheapest for you to fly into from LAX. Typically speaking midweek is the cheapest to fly. Try to go off season if you can. We went in September and it was perfect weather.

Hostel is NOT always the cheapest. VRBO and homeaway.com are great lodging options. In many cities we found private studio apartments cheaper than many hostels. Paris was one of those! Also check B&Bs as well.In Paris we stayed at a studio apartment (w/w&d, free int’l calling) with a view of the Eiffel tower right across from the Metro for under $100/nt!In London we stayed at a hostel part of the Easy Hotel chain near London Paddington Station.

Take night trains if you can to avoid a hotel stay.

London to Paris there is a overnight train and if I remember correctly there is a train from Paris to Milan.

Def use public transit. Public transit over there is SO dependable and efficient and takes you everywhere.

We were in Europe for 3 weeks and traveled by train intercity about 3 times and found Eurorail was NOT a good option for us. It seemed -to me at least- unless you were going to take the train between every single city the passes were not worth it.Try to plan out your route before hand and purchase tickets before you leave the US. It’s cheaper this way.

EuroCheapo was a GREAT resource for me when planning our honeymoon. 🙂

If you’re in Italy Cinque Terre and Florence is a must in my book!

for our Honeymoon we flew from JFK to Dublin. Took a ferry from Rosslare, IE to Fishguard, Wales then a train to London. Train from London to Paris and then a train from Paris to Munich. From Munich we went to Athens but there is def a train from Munich to somewhere in Italy.

Cinque Terre is BEAUTIFUL and we hope to go back one day for a week vacation!
