How to find a home decor style we both like?

I was in a similar position and we found middle ground by each having our own space in the house that we could decorate as we wanted. We applied both our styles for the other areas. Say, he chose a couch and I chose the throw blankets. Stuff like that. You’ll find a middle ground!

It’s a challenge!  In our case, we both owned houses, furniture, and decorative items (throw pillows, art, rugs, curtains, etc) before we moved in together, and we do have different styles.  (I love Hollywood Regency, my beloved loves Midcentury Modern.)

We did a combination of each “taking” specific rooms and making sure that there was least one thing important to each of us in every room.  The living room, for example, is mostly MCM, but also has my gorgeous HR area rug and some of my HR throw pillows.  The bedroom is almost exclusively MCM, but in exchange, I got to have the HR dining room of my dreams.

Whenever possible, we try to find “neutral” items that can go with both styles.

We blended our styles but they went together really well. He likes rustic and I like modern. He also does woodworking as a hobby, so he can build stuff that we both like. For example, in our entry way there is a desk that we made. It has my modern, metal base and is super simple with really clean lines and it has his rustic, natural shape wood top (he cut it out of a tree at my dad’s farm). I appreciate the natural and rustic elements, and as long as I still have clean lines I’m good! He’s appreciative of how the clean lines look good in our small house and it keeps the house uncluttered. Just find a way to blend your styles, and you each can give a little.
