I love this (much older) family member dearly, but she is one the most negative people I have ever known. As much as I try to cheer her up or to change the subject when she starts complaining, it never seems to work. I end up trying to avoid her as much as possible just to maintain my sanity. But at last, that is not the right solution. I would like to help her but she is incredibly stubborn and does not think she needs help–rather she blames everyone else for how she feels, even though nobody is at fault. She never has a problem with me, so I know I am one of the few people who can get through to her.
Counseling or medication are not options, as she has always refused. I’m at my wits end here since nothing seems to work! Help!

Oh, so you’ve met my mom? Haha. Some people looooove to be miserable and ther favorite hobby is complaining. You can’t help them- they usually want to be that way.

@Leeluu: are we sisters? lol your right some people just enjoy it I dont think there is much you can do if she doesnt even see its a problem, it sounds like she needs to get a hobby and get out more with friends it might improve her mood

Agree with her. No matter what she says. Sometimes a person like that will switch posistions just because they like ‘disucssions’ and debating. It can be maddening at times, SO gets like this on bad days, and then wonders why I’m not hanging around the same room.

Brutal honesty! I have an aunt who is the same way. I told her a while ago that she was needy and I just didn’t have time for her neediness and negative energy. She avoids me now and thinks I am a spoiled beatch. It may not work for you but girl it has worked wonders for me. lol
