As someone who just got married, please use “or.”  It makes it SO much easier if the couple does not have a joint account.   We had couples made out to Mr. and Mrs. Last Name, and it was tough because (1) we didn’t have a joint account and (2) we had to appear at the bank together to deposit them.

@Honey-Bee:  I would DEFINITELY do or unless you know for sure that she is changing her name. I didn’t change my name and as I learned when Darling Husband and I were cashing all our checks, it’s kind of a pain in the butt for the couple when “and” is written, even if the couple does have a joint account.  I don’t see any downside to “or” but “and” can be a pain.

    I voted Jane OR John.

But just FYI – If a couple is married, the man’s name is always written first. If a couple is NOT married, the woman’s name is first.

@Honey-Bee:  Yep, we had no trouble with the OR checks, but things made out to “Bride Last Name and Groom Last Name” were the biggest pain in the butt.

i personally would make it out to the groom. only because the bride generally changes her name, and it would be more difficult if you used the wrong name. i’d add a “congrats to the happy couple” in the info line on the bottom of the check, too.

This was a nightmare when we got married.

Lots of people addressed checks as “Mr and Mrs His First His Last” and “His FIrst His Last and My First His Last”

The problem is that I hyphenated when I married. The way they name me on the checks is not legally recognized. The checks were returned. We had to ask family/friends to write new checks.

    Use the first option.

@colorofmyheart:  This is what I did for the last wedding I went to. I had no idea if she’d be changing her name or what so I just put the groom’s name down.

I have another wedding coming up in a few weeks. Addressing the check to Bride OR groom Last Name would be okay?
