Google “questions to ask a wedding DJ” — I found a helpful list of questions online and went through them with potential DJs.  I suggest meeting with them personally, or at least talking by phone, to get a sense of their personality and professionalism.  Describe your and your fiance’s musical style and preferences, and ask for sample playlists he or she would recommend based on that.  I’d also ask for a sample timeline to see if the DJ is organized and can manage the flow of the evening well.

If you have a venue or other vendors lined up, I’d also suggest asking them for referrals to DJs they’ve worked with before and had good experiences with.  And of course ask for suggestions from friends and family who got married recently.  Also ask for a reference or two from potential DJs, especially if it’s someone you weren’t referred to by someone you know.  You can also look for reviews on Yelp and wedding websites.  Good luck!

i talked to a few djs.  then my FI and i met with a few until we met with the one that best fit our vision.

we will provide him a list of must play and do not play.

we still have time before our wedding, but we’ve discussed the types of music that will be played pre-ceremony, during cocktail hour, during dinner, etc.

it seems like my FI and myself are on the same page with the DJ.

I was extremely happy about my DJ.  He was on the list of preferred vendors at my venue.  I contacted the DJs on the list and went with the one that I had the best interaction with.  I also had our best man, who is a part time wedding DJ check him out.  Our bestman was impressed.  So I think the preferred vendor list from our venue helped me out a lot by narrowing down the choices for us.  Our DJ did more than just play music.  He kept me on schedule, set up all the sound systems for the ceremony, and even did our uplighting.
