@Mrs Grape: How about something along the lines of, “Thank you so much for your generous gift. It was incredibly thoughtful of you and will help us _____________ (furnish our home/buy our first home/buy a new car/begin our nest egg/get new floors—whatever you plan to do with the money). We were so happy to have you there to share our special day and can’t wait to see you again soon…”?

I came across this when I was writing thank you cards for graduation gifts in May.  I looked it up and asked people and everywhere I saw was along the lines of what the PP said.  You thank them for the money and then include what you plan to use it for.

Congrats on your marriage, not on the brain fart  🙂

rather than congrats, i will say “best wishes” (as per another thread that was around earlier today!)

and ya, i agree that saying what you will use the money for is the best plan.

We got mostly cash gifts and are writing messages along a similar line as PP suggested. Usually I thank them for coming first and then for their “generous gift” without saying what we’ll use it for. In reality, we used the money to pay off our final catering payment and photographer which seemed to make the most sense.

We got a lot of cash for our wedding so in our thank you cards, I wrote “thank you for contributing towards our honeymoon, etc…” I didn’t want to write something like “thank you for the $200” lol!

Our wording was something like this: “Thank you for your generous gift.  We will use it for x (we said moving expenses, honeymoon, or furnishing our new house).  It was great seeing you at the wedding.  Thank you again!”
