Help! My engagement photos were a mess! We spent hours on them and my fiance makes a bad face. Any tips on how to teach him to smile naturally. I think he didn’t want to take engagement photos and it read all over his face. Yet, he doesn’t look good in any photos.
Unbiased, he is very handsome and should look good in photos.
Any tips to getting him more magnum ready? In a nice way that makes him feel like an adonis?

Seriously, a glass of wine can do wonders for a natural smile…

This reminds me of an episode of Friends where Chandler & Monica go to get their engagement photos taken! He couldn’t smile naturally either! He always had this perverted, constipated look on his face. They tried everything, including muscle relaxers, but nothing worked! Eventually they had Joey act as a stand-in for Chandler lol
Do you have a good looking Italian friend?

My Fiance needs all the help he can get with this one too! I’ll make sure he has a glass of wine first…
And then perhaps start looking for a stand-in.

Our photographer was great for this, she said stuff to make us laugh a little and those were some of the best shots. Obviously, we weren’t laughing too hard. Maybe joke around with him a little during the photo shoot and try to get some natural smiles.

I was very particular over pictures. My Husband would either look confused or close his eyes from the flash so we asked for two photographers as part of our package. We had to pay a lot more, but we got great pictures. One photog was a traditional wedding photographer and the 2nd was a photojournalistic one. If this is an option I would try this as well.

Recessionista Bride, I LOVE that Friends episode!!!!!!
Yes, I agree, have him drink one of his favorite cocktails!!! Just don’t get drunk, you don’t want drunk sloppy pictures haha.

We once saw a mom taking pictures of her kids on vacation, and she kept saying "Show me your teeth!" to get them to smile. Fiance and I thought that was so hilarious that we now say it to eachother when we are taking pics–and it makes us laugh and get more genuine smiles for the camera.

Have someone there who will make jokes and make him laugh! There’s never a more natural smile than that!

My best smiles (and my FI’s, too) result from laughing/reacting to something cute or funny. I have a lot of trouble smiling in a way that looks normal if I’m not laughing. Maybe you can think of some cute things you say or do that always make him smile, and do those things during the pictures?
Also, while a drink or two might be a good idea for some people, I find that I can tell the difference when I see the pictures, between my "real smile" and my "happy drunk smile."

I have to do the same thing to my fiance. He needs to be coaxed in order to get a natural smile in pictures. Tell jokes, tickle him, play bite him, I’ve even pinched his butt before and that tends to work too! You have to be playful and he should reciprocate- it always makes for good, natural looking happy pictures! If you have a friend or two that are jokesters it may be good to have them stick around while you get portraits done to help Fiance loosen up.

Another piece of advice — just talk to him about it! My fiance HATES photos … but i tried to explain to him the importance of them and all that jazz and he really got it. I bet once he realizes how important the photos are to you that he’ll be willing to put a little more effort into it.
When we took our engagement pictures we tried really hard to just stay relaxed and we kept saying things to each other like "this is sooo awkward isnt it?!" in between our teeth so that we were still smiling but talking to each other. Then, as other said, we would giggle and the pictures would come out great.
Also, ask your photographer! Or go over to WeddingbeePRO and ask one of the many photographers over there, I’m sure they have some good advice!
