On my way home the other day I stopped to check the mail and one of my favorite clothing catalogues came in. DH and I were going through the mail sorting out what was junk and what was real. He tossed the catalogue in my direction (he knows I love their clothes) and I commented that I wished they would stop sending me these right now because it’s Christmas and I don’t need to be spending any money on myself at this time.
His response? “Boo, I want you to do me a favor. I want you to start buying clothes for yourself more often! One outfit each paycheck!” Here’s the thing. I hate hate hate hate shopping with a firey passion, but I do like having nice clothes to wear. Plus, I always just feel like instead of buying myself clothes, that money can go to a bill or towards something for someone else. So, we start talking about my taste in clothes and he went through and picked out, with about 9 out of 10 accuracy, the outfits I would like in the catalog and said that he’d buy them for me (since he know I won’t myself), but the issue of not knowing what size is always a problem. If he buys too big, holy hell she’ll think I think she’s fat…. if he buys too small…. oh my god she’ll think I want her to be skanky or feel bad that she can’t fit into a smaller size. lol It really did make me laugh.
The icing on the cake came when he told me he’d actually used his measuring tape attempting to measure the width of my shirts and tried to wrap it around the shirt. He says he can build me a rocket ship (he’s a manufacturing engineer) if I want one, but can not figure out womens sizes in clothing. haha I have to give him extreme credit for paying attention to my style, what I like, what I don’t and in my little experiment did a fantastic job of picking clothes that fit MY style! And NOT what he would like to see me in. haha
If you gave DH/SO a random clothing catalogue, would they be able to pick out things you would like?

@redheadedstranger: My husband is the one that picks out most of my clothes, shoes, etc., so I’d say he knows me better than I know myself when it comes to fashion.

From a catalogue, probably not, but I would have problems doing the same thing. Fabrics matter. He would probably do a half decent job in a store, but I think there would be a few things he would grab that I would reject as well.
As for sizing, I try things on. Sizes don’t always make sense!

@redheadedstranger: Yes.. well not necessarily from a catalogue, I don’t think we’ve ever gotten a clothing one.. but he knows my tastes and has great taste of his own!
Most of my favorite pieces of clothing or accessories are things that he’s picked out for me. He encourages me to buy new clothes too (I’m the same way as you, love having nice things to wear/ hate shopping), so its nice when he makes the process easier to bear.

He knows I’m a J. Crew addict and he really can’t go wrong there.

My Darling Husband used to be terrible, but now he knows my taste to a tee. Sometimes it really surprises me because he isn’t really into a fashion himself at all so its weird for him to be picking out designer items with such accuracy lol.
@MrsBuesleBee: +1 I’m a fellow JCrewaholic. My Darling Husband knows that he can always find me something in there without much effort.

Woah! I always thought my Darling Husband was a Special Snowflake!
He picks 90% of my clothing! He has GREAT taste!

Maybe a 7/10 accuracy since we like similar things but he’d like me to wear brighter clothes 😛 . Whenever I show him an item I like online (usually mixed in with other items since I browse a lot) he can guess which specific item I’m talking about. I want to get a cataloigue and tell him to pick me out an outfit now…

@redheadedstranger: Nope, nope, nope. He is terrible at it, but I have a wide variety of things I like. He can pick out a dress that looks identical to one I have, but I hate what he picked becuase it might have a pocket or something. We just chooses to stay out of my clothing matters, lol. The only thing he knows how to help me pick out for myself is shoes believe it or not.
I know his taste in clothing though very well, and I am confident when I go pick something out, he will love it for himself.

Awww he’s so sweet!! I think my fiance could pick out stuff I’d like from a catalogue, but he’d never actually buy me clothes to try and surprise me. I think it would make him so nervous! One year he got me a gift card to one of my favorite stores as a stocking stuffer. That’s the closest he’s gotten 🙂

My SO has never bought me an article of clothing. I really have no idea if he would be able to pick something out or not. He’s made a comment about an outfit every paycheck before – like OP, I always find something else more worthwhile than clothes to spend money on.
He did help me pick out a pair of shoes once and was super proud about that for awhile. He was like, “Show your mom your new shoes and tell her I picked them out!”

I would trust my Fiance to buy me “comfy” clothes, but not my work clothes. He knows my love of all things yoga pants and hoodies.

I’m pretty sure if you asked my Fiance what HE is wearing right now he’d have to look down check out what he’s wearing before he could tell you. He has no clue. That’s fine. I love shopping! LOL. He will notice certain things though from time to time but I don’t know if he could really pick something out.

I don’t think my husband really knows what I like. He has never bought me anything and we are at the mall he is fun to have along for shopping but he has never pointed to anything that he thinks I might like.

He *might* be able to pick something out. He hates clothes shopping but will often come with me. I always ask his opinion on things as I’m deciding what to try on, so I feel like he should have an idea of what I like……pick it out on his own though? I don’t know…
