That is true. But to me humans are much different than other animals….and I think humans are far above other animals. I do not think they are equals at all. I would spend $10000 to save my child. I would not do so to save my cat or dog.

unlike a dog, last time i checked i cant lick my bum for hours on end – im a firm believer that pets should not be treated as humans

@KT808:  agree with everything you just said. in general humans care less about other animals than they do about themselves/other humans

@KT808:  I had numerous pets until I moved out of my parents’ house. I raised them, loved them, considered them furry friends, and cried over their deaths. So I too, value animals.

But they are not the same as humans. They do not have the same capacities to think, feel, communicate, emote, or reason.

I do think we have a responsiblity to care for them and treat them well.

I agree to an extent.  For example, I won’t ever declaw a cat no matter what.  I consider it unnecessary and wouldn’t even consider it as a last resort; I think it’s inhumane.

However, if my animal is riddled with cancer and 10k might save my pet’s life, I won’t spend 10k on a possible treatment.  I have a threshhold for how much I would spend to save a pet’s life and it is lower than what I’d spend to save a beloved human’s life.  And if someone declaws their cat, I’m not going to equate it with someone who unnecessarily amputates a human’s fingertips, even though it’s pretty much the same thing on a purely biological level.

We’re still mammals, yes, but I certainly wouldn’t equate myself with a dog or a cat.

I care for my cat and will make sure he has a long happy and healthy life. He however is not on par with my child, and I don’t think that makes me an uncaring person.

I’ve met many men who I wouldn’t say quite equate with humans 😉

I think that other animals are very greedy and selfish as well as humans. Have you ever watched the discovery channel, when the strongest animals eat, while the weaker ones don’t and are left to starve. Or in the gorilla family when the male eats first and the females after. No they aren’t greedy when it comes to money and material items because they don’t rely on that for their vital survival.

I do agree that humans are animals, and especially for a scientist, this is the case. But not everyone agrees they are on the same playing field, afterall, we can’t just ignore the fact that religion does exists. Not everyone believes in evolution, and evolution alone.

Personally, I love my dog, but no he is not the same as having my child. My child is my heart, I wouldn’t know how to live without him, where as if my dog passes, life does go on.

I don’t think the OP was trying to say that other animals and humans should be treated equally, just that the phrase “they’re just animals” doesn’t really make sense from a biological point of view. This actually irks me too, I’m glad I’m not the only one. 🙂

I honestly don’t know if I would spend $10k to save my pup. I never thought I would spend more than $1000 and I spent about $2700 on heart surgery for him without even weighing the options.

@hisgoosiegirl:  This! Many pet behavioral problems arise from owners trying to treat them like equals.
