Hello! I need to lose a lot of weight (90+ pounds) and am striving towards being in better shape. I’ve started by attending spinning, zumba and yoga a couple times a week. Yoga doesn’t make me hungry, but after the other classes I feel like a bottomless pit! What do you eat after you workout? What do you eat the rest of the day? I’ve been hungry all day…

@cowoman: eat things that are high in protein, it will fill you up and keep you full longer.

Yep, protein. Try drinking a glass of milk mixed with vanilla protein powder and a dash of cinammon – it will fill you up and the protein is important post-workout. Tastes like a cinammon roll!

+1… Protein shake within 15 minutes of post workout. Keep some organic turkey breast on hand and eat 2 oz slices at a time if you get a hunger pang after that… Meaning, don’t starve yourself, but eat very smart… High protein, small amounts and not frequently.

@cowoman: It will fade after a while. If you are overweight because of eating portions that are too large and from having a sedentary lifestyle, then this is your body’s way of protesting from what it is used to. If you have also reduced your calories, then your body will protest even more.
Just make sure that you are eating enough and not starving yourself. The best approach is to have small meals frequently. I find that after a while, exercise actually suppresses my appetite. What is important is what you have before you exercise. It sounds like you are doing your workout in the morning and I would recommend that you have a fruit half an hour before you go. Also make sure that you stay hydrated as that can also cause a false sense of hunger.
Good luck with the weight loss!

@cowoman: being that i go to the gym after work (5pm), im ready for dinner. So when i leave the gym to go home (around 630) yeaaa im starving. So i eat a granola bar or a protein bar!

Thank you for the suggestions. I love the slice of turkey idea, eating a little fruit before going and being aware that I might not actually be that hungry. I know that I overeat way too often. Thanks for the helpful input!

@cowoman: Protein. Make you a chocolate protein shake. Also peanut butter or any nut butter is good

@cowoman: Cardio generally makes you hungrier. That’s why a lot of people don’t lose weight no matter how often they go to the gym, as they eat more to offset the hunger than they burned in the class.
Try having a small snack (a banana) before and a small protein shake (25g flavoured whey in 200ml water or milk) after.
Also, add in some strength training… but then I always say that!
I’ll have to try adding cinnamon to vanilla shakes! I’m just about to hit the weights room with a protein shake. 😉

Second what most people have said: easy to digest healthy carb before workout plus high protein snack within 15 minutes of the workout is the best way to make sure your body uses food to the best of its abilities for fuel.

I have a protein shake after workouts, it makes me feel fuller so I eat less for dinner 🙂

I am also usually hungry after workouts also…so after I’m dong working out is I drink a big glass of water with 2 hardboiled eggs, for protein. The eggs usually take care of my hunger no problem.
