cj2018 :  that really sucks.  I also have State Farm but when they asked for my husband’s DL, we were too lazy to get around to it and they never mentioned it again.  He’s on the same insurance plan now, but only because we finally got around to it.  Sorry I can’t recommend anyone else since we have the same, but you might consider talking to them again (if you liked the policy more than their tantrum) and see if you can find a more reasonable representative.

cj2018 :  I don’t have a recommendation, but wanted to say I feel your pain. Or felt. My ex-husband had to be put on my policy and our rates always went up. He’d get tickets, rolled his cars – twice. Etc. Just overall super irresponsible. But that was in current times, always happening. At least your guy (hopefully) just had a past problem. It toally sucks though because it’s through no fault of your own. I get it!!

Someone will insure you. Maybe he can be responsible for paying the difference in the rate increase? But it’s not fair for you to “resent” him for it. It was so long ago, he was honest, it’s life, shit happens.

I third looking into geico. While they probably don’t have any local offices in your area, they are great about this kind of thing. We were with them for five years before switching to Indiana Farm Bureau (which we also like but our policy is more expensive). Geico completely covered an accident that I had in my finance’s father’s car and covered an at fault accident for us as well. They also pay out well above most other insurance companies in our area.

State Farm is horrible. They dropped me because I made one claim on my house (windstorm ripped the roof off my house), and inquired about another (but didn’t file the second as it wasn’t worth it) in a six year time frame. They dropped me due to ‘unnaceptable claim activity’, but then tried to act all sickly sweet to me as they dropped me. Nope, never again will I recommend them.

I now bundle my car and my house through Progressive. I don’t know about their policies regarding drivers with poor records, but I just wanted to jump in and say that you should shop around. I’m betting you’ll find a company that will insure you.

I got the same call from State Farm just a day or two ago due to a speeding ticket from my hubby. I didn’t freak out or yell, I mean, I wasn’t pleased with the or him, but I sighed and started calling other insurance companies. What would being angry and mad and yelling accomplish? whats done is done. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a really minor inconvienence, not one to be super upset or mad about.

Like you, I didn’t realize that I would have to add my husband to my insurance after marriage. Luckily by adding him my rates did not change, but I am unsure if it’s every company that does this or not. I have AAA and he has something else. Just letting you know so you don’t waste your time with AAA because they will ask for his DL and pull his records.

cj2018 :  I was going to recommend GEICO too. They didn’t make me add my husband and they’ve always been fantastic. I’ve had them for about a decade, and any quotes I get elsewhere are 2-3x the price I have now.

If you get a quote, I’d call in because they’re really helpful with looking up membership affiliations and discounts.

ETA: I used to work at a car rental place and State Farm was the WORST to deal with for insurance claims. Getting a rental set up would quite literally take over an hour and involve me talking to almost a half dozen people. Other insurances companies took 10 minutes, tops. Even Elephant and The General had their shit together more than State Farm! That gave me a really bad impression of them.
