i havent followed that protest to much TBH. but ive heard with the amount of protestors that have been there over time that the place looks like a trash dump with the amount of litter.

which makes me wonder, how can you protest to protect the environment while at the same time littering the environment.

i do understand the meaning behind it, but camping in a field for months on end isnt going to bring change.

Not really following it. I think it’s foolish, to be honest. This isn’t the first pipeline. They’re pretty dang safe. Wildlife adapt.

herrera2016 :  I remember a thread about this months ago and there were a lot of “well if they didn’t want this to happen they should have gone to this one town hall meeting :)” and “well the protestors are just as bad because…” I posted about where to donate supplies to water protectors and my comment was moderated for ‘self promotion.’

Sorry bee but this thread is just going to give you more of a headache/heartache. The moral defense is “it doesn’t affect me so I don’t have to care.”

I was raised in North Dakota and lived very close to a different reservation. If tribes say “no,” then listen. I have no problem deferring to them. Thus, I’m supportive of the protestors. But for chrissakes, clean up your damn garbage. It really burns my britches that they are trashing the place and leaving old mattresses and crap everywhere.

Kslim13 :  Exactly. I have seen images of the trash and it is atrocious. But no protests about that.

herrera2016 :  I had a big long response typed out, but then I realized that there is no point to it. Everyone seems to have an opinion and cannot hear anyone else’s. So in essence this post is going to be those who agree with the OP being praised, and those who do not getting yelled at. Nothing that needs to be had.

Ukulele4You :  Honestly, it wouldn’t bother me.  Pipeline travel is safer than by rail.  I would rather live by a pipeline than by a railroad track or freeway.

The real issue here is that as a whole, we need to cut down our use of fossil fuels and move to renewables (but you will find that people also don’t want to live by a wind farm either).  Our government needs to push us to get there, because the vast majority of people won’t make changes until they need to.  This really scares me about our future, as our current government is taking steps backwards on this front.

Until we get there, we need pipelines, and this isn’t the first one by any means.  I admit I haven’t read up much on it being on holy land, and if it is, then that’s horrible.  However, it really bothers me when people say they are taking the land, because they aren’t.  Legally, they aren’t doing anything wrong.  Also, at this point 99% of the line is built, it would be a huge waste not to finish it.  The time to deal with all this is not when construction is basically over.

My aunt is a Soil Science PHD and she has many things to say about this that no layman would understand. A regular gas station, after a close down, would need years (decades often) to reopen as something else if there’s even a smidgeon of a leak to the soil. That soil, per my aunt, becomes contanimated which then affects the underground water supply.

Imagine a whole pipeline passing thru a body of water and bordering your land. How do you know there’s even a guarantee that there would be no leaks–like 100%. Because if there’s even a 1% leak, that has a significant snowball effect on the quality of your soil.

Think about that.

lahela017 :  then by all means please move to a reservation. Property values will be really low! Grab it while you can!

herrera2016 :  I agree with you, but I generally find political threads on weddingbee to be a sh*tshow because there is always at least one poster with differing views who wants to argue.  If you want to commiserate with like minded people, I don’t think this is the place.
