Hi Bees – has anyone had appendicitis or symptoms similar? I have had pain for 3 weeks that started near my belly button and has moved to my lower right side. I went to the doctors thinking it may be an ovarian cyst. They took blood work, ultrasound, and a CT scan. The blood work and ultrasound showed normal results with everything but the CT shows inflammation changes below the appendix. My MD did not know what this could be since my blood work came back normal and my appendix is a normal size. I was referred to a surgeon but the wait to see them is killing me. I am thinking it may be pre-appendicitis. Has anyone experienced something similar??

What type of ultrasound did you have? As far as I know, you’d need a transvaginal ultrasound to find an ovarian cyst (though I could be wrong). How long do you have to wait to see the surgeon?

The fact that you said your bloodwork was normal leads me to believe that there were no signs of infection (elevated WBC’s) so I believe the doctor scheduled an appt. with a surgeon to rule out other causes of inflammation. If you aren’t comfortable waiting to see a surgeon schedule an appt. with another doctor. You have the right to a second opinion! However, if you start running a fever or your pain increases go back to the doctor, these could be signs of appendicitis.

@MsJ26: I’d jut have to say that in my experience, appendicitis doesn’t last that long – your appendix gets inflammed and then bursts, leaking infection into you, usually in a pretty shot period of time, from a few hours from onset to a day. Once it bursts, the pain is over, but you are in danger from the infection.
I think you’re being sent to a surgeon jut so they can have a good look at you. Try not to stress. If you’re in medical care, they’ll sort you out. I’ve known a few people who’ve put off going to the doctor (Ok, I’m one of them) almost too long. A kid working in my office this summer thought it was really bad gas, and it burst on him while they were waiting to see their doctor. He’s fine now.

If you had appendicitis I think you’d know and eventually it would burst so I doubt it would be going on for as long as it is. Could be any number of other things. Just try to be patient. Good luck.

Update – Thanks Bees for your support! I went to the surgeon and he said the CT scan showing an inflamed appendix is not normal and is pre-appendicitis. I go into surgery soon :(. I am glad though that this is being taken care of and no more mysteries! Wish me luck!
