You’re a good person with a big heart. I feel the same way, it tears me up when I see dogs on the humane society website for a whole month, or see how many adult cats are waiting to be adopted, knowing that they don’t all get a happy ending. On craigslist too, when I see how many animals are unwanted by their owners, and how many of them are being offered for free (eek!!). I can put my big girl pants on and admit I’ve cried over it.

All 3 of my pets are rescued, and my dog was 6 years old when I found her at the shelter. She was such a sweet girl, but she was homeless when she was found (in MN in the dead of winter, by the way), and her hair was so matted that when they groomed her, they had to leave some patches without any hair at all. It made me so sad that I pretty much cried right there and Fiance agreed to let me bring her home with me.

I totally agree with you, shelters should be the very first stop for anyone looking for a companion pet. Those animals have so much love to give, and I swear some little part of my dog’s brain knows what we did for her. My cats, on the other hand….. just kidding πŸ™‚

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose:  Awww he’s precious!  He looks like our little guy!  (He’s a beagle/jrt mix).  His forever home will come!  I’d definitely foster him if I were you.  You’re so sweet!

To second her post, Rescuing is definitely the greatest thing we’ve ever done!  Don’t forget that older dogs need love, too!

ETA:  Where in VA are you?  I can help you look for a home!  I wish we could take him!  Milk would love him!

You sound like me.  I can’t bring home any more pets, and there was a thing on FB today from a local shelter with pictures of all large dogs that look like pits and pit mixes that need homes soon.  We could never have a large dog because Darling Husband was attacked as a child (not by a pit, though) and is terrified of big dogs, but it still tears me up that all those guys are in such desperate need for homes.

He’s so cute! I definitely try to PUSH adoption on people if I can…my niece bought her first dog and it KILLED me! I think my mom and I (and quite a few other people) made her feel kind of bad about buying & not rescuing because she adopted her 2nd =)

I would 100% help you with your giant rescue sanctuary if I won a million dollars! I am the exact same way, it kills me when I go on shelter websites. I hope you can help him find a home!

This makes me sad too! : ( I can’t even go to the shelter because I cry every single time. I want all the dogs!

He is so cute, I can’t believe he’s been there so long. Is it a kill shelter? I hope not. : (

i always tell my husband if I ever won the lottery I’d buy a ton of land and build a huge no kill shelter where they could run around and play during the day and not be in cages all the time.

omg he’s so cute!! i have 2 local shelters and a bunch of rescue groups on my FB page and it’s so hard for me to see the animals they post. i want to adopt all of them but we live in an apartment and can only have a cat (we adopted him last summer when he was 5). i volunteered at a shleter for awhile and got attached to 2 dogs. one was a cute jack russell mix named tulip and the other a chi/terrier mix named ledge. tulip was taken by the SPCA (they were located right across the street so they would take animals who’d been at the shelter for awhile). when i went to go see her, she’d already been adopted and i was sooo happy. one day when i went in to the shelter, i saw ledge in the lobby and found out that one of the volunteers adopted him. i think i cried.

I’ve been banned by Fiance from friending any more shelters or Facebook pages for specific crazy stories (Google the Patrick Miracle for an example) because it just triggers my depression everytime. I haven’t unfriended those pages, but I put them into a specific list that I can’t look at anymore. It’s too heartbreaking. I just want to save them all. Ugh, now I’m crying. Those poor babies…

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose:  OMG I feel the same way! I would love to have a shelter home for stray dogs and cats. We have two cats, one was a stray cat the other was adopted from a shelter. It so worth it!

That is so sad! I always feel heartbroken when I see all the dogs and cats who are in need of a home. I adopted all of my pets and am really glad I went that route.
