Bees…I’m very upset.
I’ve had a rock-hard, swollen lymph node behind my ear for 18 months. It hurts when I am sick (throbbing pain that hurts my entire face/trapezius) and I CONSTANTLY get asked what the lump behind my ear is/if I am sick. A few months ago, 7 lymph nodes flared up to be rock hard and huge. I went to urgent care and was referred to an ENT. They spontaneously resolved, except for this one.
I work a procedure clinic 1-2 times per month for the last 15 months. Most of the time, lumps are nothing. Like, 9 times out of 10, they are benign. Like, 9.7 times out of 10, they are benign. This last procedure clinic, we had…not one, but two patients with spindle cell malignancies. What the eff are the chances? Scared the bajeezus out of me =(
I was told to get my lump removed 12 months ago, but that it was probably nothing. I was stupid. I didn’t have insurance, so I just ignored it. STUPID.
So…I made an appointment to finally get this thing removed after those 2 patients with spindle cell malignancy, which was today.
It’s not very superficial, I mean, we think it’s a lymph node! Obviously it’s kind of deep. And it’s right on the bone! So he had to use a ton of Lido w/Epi – that sh*t hurts (pardon my French!)… I bled a lot and he had to dig around a lot, and I wasn’t fully numbed the deeper he went. Stitches were placed, and I went back to work.
The lido wore off and MAN my whole side of my head hurts =( It’s throbbing, swollen, and very bruised. I started bleeding through the stitches in front of patients today. I was sad cuz it hurt, but I was just so happy not to have to worry about it anymore.
Well, I just looked in the mirror…HE DIDN’T REMOVE THE CORRECT LUMP. He is a GREAT doctor. He is so well respected and has done really good work for a lot of patients with cancerous lesions (he is an ENT). I never thought you could miss the lump. He’s seen it before. He’s evaluated it twice before. It’s huge! It sticks out of the side of my neck!!!! People I don’t even know tell me I have it =(
I’m so upset because I had to go through all this, take time off of work, will have to pay for the pathologist’s report, and am in all this pain all for the WRONG LUMP. =(((((
This is right after the procedure:
^^ The lump is the huge white thing to the right of the incision. This is a couple hours after the procedure.
^This is it after it flared up a couple months ago. You can see that there are actually two right next to each other. The left one healed to be normal size pretty quickly. I have more pictures of other nodes on other parts of my body if anyone wants to see.
I’m at a loss. Am I overreacting? What would you do in this situation? Has anyone had rock hard swollen lymph nodes, were they benign? Why is this happening? =(((
Sorry for whining. I’m just…so frustrated. I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about this anymore =(
ETA: I’m not upset at the doctor. He was so nice and it was an honest mistake. I’m just sad about the whole situation in general =(
ETA2: I am insured now, so it won’t be like a jillion dollars, but the pathology report will be at least $150 plus some procedure costs…In between $30-$100…so not too much. It’s not really the money that bugs me =/
