It makes me so sad that people are so close minded. We just passed gay marriage in Seattle and everyone was so happy, even if they weren’t affected by it. I still fail to understand how gay marriage is “harmful” to children, as many people that are against it would try to make you believe. I agree with her 100% as well that her neighbors religious beliefs should not dictate her life. Your religious beliefs are your own and no one elses!

If it’s any comfort, as a native North Carolinian who’s still here I can tell you that people around here are mad as hell about this amendment. There are some who are for it, but I have a lot of hope that it’s not going to pass.

wow that was an incredible story.  I really hope that amendment does not pass.  People should not have the right to vote on thing that drastically changes others lives.  A family is a support system and this is exactly what these women have and those boys are lucky to have two loving parents.

There is nothing threatening about your life. If someone’s marriage is threatened by other people getting married, then theirs wasn’t that strong to begin with in my opinion.

Is that your real wedding date on your profile? Getting close!

@MrsCarnival:  It is not that they are threatened by other people getting married. They are being threateded by the state government saying that a marriage they have been in for years is no longer a marriage.

@globalmargaret:  To clarify: you’re saying that for a state government to permit same-sex marriage would make all previous (heterosexual) marriages null and void?

@globalmargaret:  No, I understand the article and the OP’s concern over the bill and the fact that it would dissolve current same-sex marriages. I was more or less referencing the people who support this kind of legislation and use the whole “it threatens traditional marriage” argument. Sorry if I wasn’t clear about that!

I fail to see how gay and lesbian marriages threatens others marriages?  People need to mind their own business and put this extra time and energy used to complain about others into something more constructize like their own families.

As a North Carolinian, this Amendment is one of the more offensive things that has come from the majority conservative legislature in the past couple years. I haven’t talked to anyone in favor of it, but living in one of the more liberal counties in the state, and associating myself with a mostly liberal group of friends does bias me.

I’m disheartened that this atrocity even exists in a form that we as citizens are able to vote on, but unfortunately it does and it will probably pass. Poll after poll shows that there’s a majority who will vote for it, many of whom would change their vote if they knew more about what the Amendment entails and how it will also invalidate thousands of straight couples’ civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Gay marriage is already illegal in North Carolina. The fact that somehow lawmakers thought that they needed to further entrench the law in North Carolina’s Constitution is basically like rubbing the noses of all gay North Carolinians in just little their civil rights matter.

If you know anyone in NC, urge them to get out and vote on May 8. Every single vote counts.

@globalmargaret:  Ummm, I’m not sure what you are trying to say – would you mind clarifying?

@village_skeptic:  That is the same question I have.

I live in Canada and it still kind of blows my mind that there are states who still haven’t caught up with this century.
