How many people and how much stuff will you have with you?

I can name pretty much any make/model of car that passes me on the road. I drive a full size SUV that’s just above the Escape. The Charger/Escape thing is reasonable to me. If you have comfortably driving a minivan you should be fine. Chargers are pretty big for a car…all cars like that remind me of boats.

Fiance says:

Dodge Charger – if it’s a V8 it will get less gas mileage than if it’s V6 (can you know this?), luggage will be slightly different; see below. You may be more comfortable driving it.

Ford Escape – You’ll technically get more luggage space because you can lay the back seats down. Will actually probably get better fuel economy if Charger is a V8. Also you’ll get a luggage rack (all have them, apparently.) Will drive more like the mini-vans you are used to.

He also said other manly things and words I don’t know about fuel economy and such.

If you will be getting in and out of said rental car in a wedding gown, I’d recommend the full size car over the SUV – it will be much easier.

The charger has a HUGE trunk.. But you have to be able to shove stuff into the back of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Escape will have “taller” space, but it isn’t as deep.

If you go onto the Charger and Escape Websites, they’ll probably have ALL KINDS of info about luggage capacity.

Fiance still thinks you’d get more space in the Escape — see luggage racks are standard. ๐Ÿ™‚

Seating-wise, it will probably be more comfortable in the charger. It is wider and has a fair amount of leg room (less than the crown vic!)

Any way you can cut down on luggage or have it shipped ahead of you? Does the rental agency offer roof-top carriers?

My vote would be the Charger (if it’s a V6 like one PP mentioned). Big trunk, and IMO cars are generally just sort of “roomier” so the backseat would likely be more comfy for everyone back there. I drive an Explorer and the backseat is not crazy comfortable, and since it’s an SUV they are very straight backed and you can’t really slouch/relax. The Escape is just a smaller version of what I drive. Again, like PP said, vertical storage space in the back, and the luggage racks on the top would be a pain and mean tie-straps and extra work to secure them.

Also…gas mileage on the Escape stinks too. I thought about downsizing to one for that reason, but a friend who had one told me not to bother because it wasn’t any better than what I drive now. And now my boss has one and she fills up just as often as I do (actually more with a long commute).

ETA: Charger or Crown Vic. They look like they’d be roomy with a lot of trunk space too. At least what I can tell everytime a cop passes me by ๐Ÿ™‚

They look bigger than the Charger IMO. But all I have is observation, I’ve never driven/looked closely at either.

We had a Charger during our last vacation, and i think it might be too small for you and all your stuff. We were 4 adults and each of us had one small and one larger suitcase, plus handbags and stuff you don’t put into a suitcase, like cameras, coats and so on. There was not enough space in the trunk for all the suitcases so we had to squeeze them in the back, between our legs. The car was almost bursting!

Oh no wait, i didn’t remember correctly, we had travel bags instead of small suitcases. Whatever, this was our crap ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe it helps you with your decision
