They might be.  Sometimes, with early labor contractions, women only feel the peak of the contraction.  My contractions always felt the same even BHs just felt like really mild versions of active labor contractions to me), but some describe contractions differently at different stages of pregnancy and labor.

Doctors will often tell you to drink some water and lie down on your left side if you think you’re having contractions.  If the pains go away, you’re good to continue on with your regular activities.  If the pain don’t go away, fall into a pattern or intensify, it’s time to start thinking about having a baby!  Good luck!

Is your uterus tightening too?  Like bowling ball hard?  If they are contractions, your uterus will get really tight and hard, and you might feel a pinch of pain at the apex of the contraction, then your uterus will loosen up again.  If so, consider yourself lucky!  That means the first time you feel the really bad contractions probably won’t be until after your water breaks!  🙂

If there is no uterus action, it’s probably the baby kicking or stretching against a pinched nerve, muscle, or organ.  Silly baby.

ETA-I almost wrote something cheeky about looking for apostrophes but then I remembered being 9 months pregnant!

Yeah, as MightySapphire said, unless you feel your uterus/belly hardening all around, it could just be a good swift baby kick. That’s my test at least– when I feel pain or any sort of hard movement, I feel around my belly. Just in one spot or one side? Ok, that’s a kick or a push from baby. Hard all around the belly? Ok, that’s a contraction.

I don’t know, I never experienced hardness of my belly; not during BH contractions, not even during labor contractions.  Maybe this is different for different women?

@firsttimemom: My contractions were like a minute long.  I could feel my uterus drawing up and tightening into this hard ball, then at the peak it was like a gas pain, then it would relax and soften up.  If they are that fast, it’s probably baby poking your ovaries or something.  :-)~  Dirty Delete loved to do that to me!
