Poor Peter. He licked a spot on his belly until it was raw, so now, the cone of shame and the most pathetic face he could conjure up.

Poor kitty! We only had to do that to one of our cats and it was because a neighbor shot him in the leg and poor Simba kept chewing the cast off. They look so pathetic in those things! lol
Aw! Poor Peter! 🙁 Did you find out why he licked the spot raw?
@LindsayMaree: I think it’s habit. He was at the vet a week or so ago. Nothing came up in blood or urine tests. I’ve put him on hypoallergenic wet food. My vet suggested giving him an antihistamine but I haven’t tried it yet. I think I’ll go pick it up tomorrow and start him on it. He started licking his belly years ago when he got a cut on it play fighting with one of the other cats, and I guess when it was healing it got itchy (like scabs do when they’re healing), so he started licking. Slowly he’s been licking all the hair off his belly but now it’s escalated to him getting sores because of it. I think it’s A) habit, and B) negative attention seeking. He gets tons of attention anyways, but when he licks his belly I tell him to stop and when he does it’s usually followed with “good boy” and a pat on the head. I don’t want to see him hurting himself, so it’s going to be the cone of shame for a few days and antihistamines starting tomorrow I guess!
@bakerella: I do not understand why you torture poor Peter. Based on that picture, it’s obvious that no one loves him, he never receives any attention, and he spends his life surrounded by a forcefield of neglect. Oh, the agony. His life is quite obviously a living hell.
I suspect you’re right that the cause for his behavior is psychological, not physical. There are anti-anxiety meds you can try – maybe ask your vet about those. And make sure his self-inflicted sores aren’t infected, since any sort of infection will make those bad boys itch like crazy, causing him to lick even more.
Awww, poor Peter…
I feel so guilty wheneve one of our little ones has to wear the cone of shame, 1. for putting it on in the first place 2. for thinking it looks so adorable! Honey looks like a little lady with hers on, and even takes sunbaths with it.
Here’s Toby and his cone of shame. This was after he swallowed a rubber bouncy ball and had to have surgery….
@redherring: It’s true. He’s so poorly treated around here 😉 I took the cone of shame off for a couple hours today because his sores looked healed but he went back to licking, so the cone went back on. Poor monkey. The vet did suggest anti-anxiety meds if the antihistamines didn’t work. I haven’t had a chance to go pick up the antihistamines just yet because my other cat Smee is really sick, so hopefully I’ll get out to pick it up for him tomorrow. We’re falling apart around here!!!!
@Linz1231: That is a BIG cone of shame for a little dog!
I got major guilt post-neutering, mostly due to the cone, when it was off his spirits were pretty good:
Now just imagine how much a cone that fits a 140 pound dog gets in the way, the thing spanned the hallway when he ran down it, and he thought it was fun to run at you and cone-butt you in the legs/belly … I had little stripey bruises over my thighs, and abdomen by the end of the week! He also tried to scoop the cat up in the cone!
Poor kitty!! Here’s Eva our Corgi after she got spayed. She feels his pain!
Aww, these pictures crack me up! Toby is such a big baby!
@bakerella – I thought it was pretty big too! LOL. Luckily I can work from home a lot, so I stayed home so he didn’t have to wear it very often – just when I left the house.
