Maybe you just don’t use a first name at all?  I think it would be a little odd to write “Mr. and Mrs. Jane Doe.”

I just emailed everyone and asked for their spouses names.  It wasn’t that time consuming or difficult, and worth it to make sure I didn’t offend anyone or spell any names wrong.

Mr and Ms. Jane would be strange, not the end of the world, but it would still be strange. I am with PP Mr and Mrs Doe.

Another vote for Mr. and Mrs. Doe. I think using the wife’s first name to address the husband would be very odd

I agree, Mr. and Mrs. Doe sounds better. Or, like PP said, just call/email and ask.

Fiance and I realized we didn’t know a lot of spouses on his side of the family (he has a HUGE family) so we Facebook-stalked everyone until we figured out their spouse/SO’s names, haha.

Make a generic email to your friends – “I just want to make sure all of the names are spelled right.” People will appreciate it (and probably believe it!).

I have one of those names that always gets spelled wrong, so it’s win-win anyway and no one needs to know that you forgot a name or two.

@PurpleIris:  I think that’s totally acceptable, but she’s going to have to learn their names at some point for place cards (if she uses them), thank you notes, etc.
