sososoconfused :  you cannot see anything but a thickened lining at 4 weeks pregnant. I have no idea why your OB scanned you. You should have a serum quantitative hCG done.

There’s only so much you can do when testing urine – the tests at the doc’s office won’t be too much different than a FRER.

Someone can correct me, but I believe the sac is what would be visible at a 4 week ultrasound although it wouldn’t be large.

Yes, your uterine lining should be thick if you have not had a period because it is what you shed when you have your period.

Having a pregnancy end very early on is generally referred to as a chemical pregnancy. I don’t know if you have had one. It seems early to tell. You’ll know for sure when you do bleed a normal or greater than normal amount or when you get more positive tests/your follow up appointment.

Yes, although it sounds unlikely given your doctor’s appointment. I’m sorry. It’s a major bummer, but medically quite common. Lots of people have chemical pregnancies and just assume it’s a late period. Unfortunately I think it’s a bit of a waiting game right now. If you bought more than one test, you can always give it a try in the morning and see what it says.

Just take a deep breath and relax.  Im not trying to be condescending because I know this can be stressful, but honestly there is nothing you can do but wait.  It wont be long till you have a definitive answer and until then try not to stress about it.

throughthelookingglass87 :  Sacs are generally not visible at 4 weeks pregnant. Usually won’t even schedule an ultrasound until hCG levels are over 1000.

I’d say you’re most likely pregnant, and your spotting was normal for a healthy pregnancy (it’s usually only worrisome when it’s bright red and/or heavy). As long as it’s just when you wipe and you don’t need to wear a liner, it’s normal. Doctor’s offices use the same cheap HPTs that you can buy from the Dollar Tree or Walmart, which aren’t likely to detect pregnancy this early with anything other than condensed first-morning pee—and I presume the sample you gave them was later in the day.

As PP have mentioned, 4 weeks is too early to see much of anything on an ultrasound. My OB wouldn’t even see me until I was 6 weeks since there’s nothing they could do to assess the health of the pregnancy before then. I was 7 (almost 8) weeks when they found the sac and heartbeat. It’s far too early right now to really know, and since you’re not having heavy bleeding I doubt you’ve had a miscarriage at this point.

Stay calm, take another HPT in the morning if it’ll help you feel better. TBH your doc doesn’t sound super competent if they let you leave that office worried that you miscarried, not finding anything on a 4 week ultrasound is super common for viable pregnancies—it’s possible you ovulated later than expected and you’re not even as far along as you think. I would wait a week or two and seek a second opinion.

sososoconfused :  and you read the test within 5 minutes, right? The lines showed up immediately? This actually happened to me (negative preg test at the doctor) and I had a serum hCG of 563.

If you are pregnant (which seems likely) the best thing you can do is relax. Are you taking prenatals? They’re incredibly important for baby so get on a great one now with DHA.
