From my mother!!
I am back with my parents for the run up to Christmas, with SO joining us at the end of the week. We were sitting having lunch yesterday and were talking about my SO, who is usually referred to by name and mum says “you should go and phone you’re…” and the she pauses and says “I don’t know what to call him, boyfriend?”
Now I’ve heard her refer to him as “partner” and “Ladyartichoke’s <insert positive adjective here> young man” before, so this is nothing new – but the tone implied that she thinks the word undermines the seriousness of our relationship. Then my brother pipes up and jokes “It’s fiance… at least that’s what I’ve heard”
I am so happy that my family are all accepting of him. The word boyfriend coming from the women who referred to previous relationships as friendships (and would seriously introduce boyfriends as “Ladyartichoke’s friend”).
So yes, he is my boyfriend (gold star to mum)!
I’m sorry for all my random little stories of late, I’m just filled with Christmas spirit and want to share it! 🙂

I got a civil union with my Fiance two years before we got engaged so I could have a visa. But we certainly were not married, nor engaged. My dad kept on calling him my fiance for about a year! It was so awkward, especially when my dad would introduce Fiance to other people as such….
In France a civil union is called a PACS, so before we got engaged I told everyone he was my pacman 🙂

I do think “boyfriend” is such a weird term for an adult relationship, especially a serious relationship… but things like “partner” just sound really silly to me…its kind of awkward any way you go lol…

@alwaysamaid: I totally 100% agree, I thought it was just me. Bizarrely I don’t think “girlfriend” sounds as weird, but whenever I refer to SO as my “boyfriend” I kinda get the creeps (well, an odd sensation), especially since he’s in his 30s. Generally refer to him as my other half. Because you’re right, partner doesn’t fit quite right either. Future fiance… swoon…. lol
