@anonanonanonbee:  I’ve been in a pretty similar situation to you – and to all the people who are saying he needs your help more than ever have clearly not dealt with this kinda stuff before!

About 6 months ago I was in almost exactly the same situation – a guy who I’d been friends with for a couple of years became WAY too intense. A bunch of his friends moved away and he was lonely so he clung on to me. He sounds a lot like your friend, but with a job. Worst of all, he had this really creepy unrequited love for a girl he didn’t know at ALL and told me all of the weird things going through his head (nothing sexual, thankfully) and showed me letters he wanted to give to her. He’s a seriously negative person, a big time emotional blackmailer, and quite self obsessed. He was literally sucking the happiness out of me. One night, I had a dream about him and his situation and that was when I snapped – I couldn’t stand the thought of putting up with his crap for a moment longer. That day I wrote him a really nice, and supportive email saying how I thought he would benefit from speaking to someone with more professional experience and that it had all become a bit overwhelming for me. To his credit, he did back off and now I talk to him very, very occasionally but basically still avoid him as much as I can so I don’t get sucked back into being the person he depends on. My life has improved SO SO much. Best decision ever to end that friendship and I don’t regret it at all.

With regards to your situation, given that he sent you a nasty email, I would just ignore, ignore, ignore. I’m sorry to not have more helpful advice, but just wanted you to know you can escape from these horribly dependent and negative people. Good luck!
