@Nostawyn:  I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking family and friends to waste energy moving boxes of stuff I was just going to get rid of.

The problem with people helping us move is that stuff means different things to each person. For example, books might mean nothing to me. I read it, enjoyed it, time to pass it to someone who might enjoy them too. Not always the case though. And for someone else their books might be sacred. Same thing with other possesions. It is hard for everyone to see the worth and  meaning behind other people’s posessions. Add people trying to decide or pressing us to get rid of some of our most priced posessions to the stress of moving and it can make the most mellow person in the world snap! Lol

@julies1949:  I do it for them, they can do it for me. I hauled at least 7 boxes of old magazines up 3 flights of stairs when my brother moved last summer. He can handle returning the favor. Besides, I tend to justify owning things to myself when it comes time to pack up. “Yeah this quesadilla maker has dust on it, but I’m going to have a bigger kitchen and want to use it.” “Oh I forgot I had this picture, I’ll find a cool place for it on the wall at my new place.” A little later I realize there are still some boxes that haven’t been unpacked, and I have to admit that I’m not going to use that stuff after all.

I used to be like you all. Then I got a job assignment and had to change continents with less than a week’s notice. Those professional movers came in and packed up my whole 3 story house (in which I’d been living alone for 10 years) in 2 days with no prep. Seriously, ladies…only way to do it. Once you try it, you’ll never want it any other way!

I like the sorting process that goes with moving. Having someone else do that for me would totally bug me! Maybe if we were working together in the same room at the same time. But I wouldn’t just send someone into a room with boxes to have a go.

It depends. My Future Mother-In-Law is AMAZING at packing and unpacking and being super organized in general. So it was awesome to have her fly here and help us when we moved into our house, plus I love her and enjoy her company. But I wouldn’t want anyone who would throw any of my stuff away, without asking if that’s what I wanted, anywhere near it.

I like the organization that goes into moving. It gives me a chance to remember what all I own and discard quite a bit of it. Because of that, I do not want anyone to help me pack. I want certain things in boxes together, especially those things that I’ll need immediately. I let my mom help me once when I was still at my undergrad campus and somehow my toothpaste ended up with my packed sweaters and my hairbrush went missing as well….oif.

However, help lifting things is always appreciated, as is the final swift clean-up after everything’s moved out!
