@myluverbuny:  I’d warn you against simply refusing to pay.  Many places will consider this theft and could have you arrested.  It sucks that he didn’t tell you everything upfront in a clear manner, but you need to get everything in writing.  Plus, a venue with no written contract/pricing should be a huge red flag.

Why would you think children don’t count? It seems like common sense that you would pay for every person attending. And tax is pretty standard, you pay taxes on everything.

@myluverbuny:

You can’t just not pay. I would suggest you having a face to face meeting to discuss everything and maybe trying to work out a deal with management. I don’t feel you should have to pay for babies or anyone under 2 for that matter. However if it is in your contract you can’t fault him cause you didn’t read it. HE kind of sounds like a sleaze ball. I am a business owner and before anyone signs my contract I make sure I go over ALL the specifics but as we know some business owners use contract as a way to tack on hidden fees.

Talk to the guy, or have you SO talk to him and maybe he can work something out.

If you did not sign a contract I do not see how that is theft… I would not have given a deposit without first seeing the packages… Number one rule of Wedding Planning, Assume Nothing! With that said,  I am super sorry that this is happening to you  Frown. I would call him (though emails are great for a paper trail) and ask him about children pricing over the phone. What is the 24 dollars covering? Is it for the food and such as well, or just allowing you to have it there?

@myluverbuny:  not sure why you assumed children wouldn’t count – they’re going to eat.  I wouldn’t include infants who won’t be eating in the head count, but any child eating solid food would clearly count. $24/pp is a pretty good deal still in my opinion.

Ah, you should have gotten a contract before forking up money. Then you would have known what you were getting yourself into. Though there is definitely blame on their part for not being up front with you.

It comes down to how important this venue is. Suck it up and pay the cost for everyone person (adult and child) attending, or back out, lose your deposits, and find some place cheaper. I wouldn’t refuse to pay anything – that could get you into a hot legal mess.

Do meet with him though and try to work things out and clarify all costs and expectations. And get a contract! And read it!

maybe they can do some sort of a discount for the little ones, with a less fancy meal for them? or you can maybe work out a payment plan. Ours had a 21%service fee and 8.9% tax and gratuity on top of that, OUCH oh and  $3 upcharge per peron for dinner/plated meal, above what the actual menu price showed :/ bummer. but we are sucking it up. we did 2 kegs and a cash bar to help.

@myluverbuny:  I don’t know where in Canada you are but the HST runs about that (where I am it’s 13%) and it must be paid on everything. They are providing you a service so there will be tax charged on it.

As for the children, I would ask (nicely) that he reconsider charging you for the infants but I don’t understand why anyone would just assume children are free.

Did you sign the contract when  you made the deposit? If not you might have some grounds to stand on still. I would go and talk to him, bring the printed emails and the package prices and discuss the misunderstanding with him. I agree with a pp where paying for anyone under the age of 2 is unacceptable.
