Today I called in sick for the first time at my new job. I feel so guilty! I know this is what sick days are for, but I feel so guilty, especially because I think my nausea/aches are related to something I ate, and I’ll probably feel fine later today.
Does anyone else feel awful for calling in sick?

No. Especially since my company only gives 3 sick days a year. I’m at work with the flu (including a fever) right now. I wish I could afford to call off, but instead I guess I’ll just infect everyone.

I always feel guilty calling in sick. And we have a pretty liberal sick time policy with plenty of time off. The problem is, if I’m out sick, someone else has to cover me and do any urgent work that comes up for me. We all work together and it’s not a big deal, I just feel bad. But there are a lot of people that abuse the sick time policy here so then I remind myself that i’m NOT one of those people and only take the time when I really need it.

Before maternity leave, I worked as a behavior specialist at an elementary school. I have a therapist as a partner, but leaving her alone to deal with not only her regular appointments with kiddos, but with the crises I usually deal with made me feel terribly guilty. Plus, then the teachers didn’t have the support I usually provided. It made me feel awful, so in 1.5 years, I took exactly .5 a sick day 🙂 (Though I missed other days for a funeral and some trainings, so I felt guilty more than that.)
When I was a teacher, I felt horrible leaving kiddos with the awful subs we had available, so in 2 years, I took 1 sick day. I was so sick once that I would get these terrible coughing fits, couldn’t breathe or talk, and I would hand an empty glass to one of my students, who knew to go fill it up in the hall and bring it back. One of the kids said “Teacher, you ought to take a day off.” I looked at him and said “would you behave for a substitute?” And he said “oh, I guess not.” “That’s why I’m here.”

This is the first time I’ve called in sick in 5 years, and also the first time that it doesn’t really make a huge difference in people’s day if I do, but I still feel guilty!

I feel terrible when I call in, even when I’m really ill.
In November I came down with a wicked case of bronchitis. I couldn’t go a full minute without having a coughing fit and actually bruised my ribs from it. I felt extremely guilty for using two sicks days haha
My company has only eight employees so we really depend on each other. I didn’t feel as bad when I worked for a company of 150+ employees!
Edit: Wishing you a speedy recovery, OP! Hope you can get plenty of rest. 🙂
