The dog is adorable, but are you seriously considering not returning him to his owners, who obviously care about him enough that they had him microchipped in the first place?! I find it to be pretty awful that you’re judging strangers about the kind of neighborhood they are from and thinking about not returning their dog based on that and them forgetting to change the phone number attached to the microchip. There is a family out there who is more than likely heartbroken over their lost dog – you can do the right thing and take him home to his rightful owners, or you can essentially steal him. I think it’s very clear which choice you should make.

He looks decently groomed. A neglected maltese is something terrible. I think you need to do the right thing and let all the shelters know you have him, as well as make signs and so forth. Sometimes local papers run ‘found’ ads for free. Seriously, a google image search of ‘neglected maltese’ pulls up somethign entirely different.

Well yes, you should take him to his home and make sure they actually want the dog. For all any of us know though, the owners could have just decided they didn’t want or couldn’t care for the dog anymore and turned it loose. I know if my dog was missing, I’d be calling the microchip company and making sure they had my current contact info and would be plastering missing dog signs everywhere on top of being out looking for him. My dog is my baby! I assume the microchip company has your number in case they do call looking for him?

Gizmo sure is cute!

You could try making some ‘found’ posters & hanging them up. Just don’t put her pic or a very detailed description.

@lpisanelli:  A lot of times when dogs are transferred to another owner, the microchip information is not updated with the company. So it might be that the current owners haven’t gotten the dog registered–might explain the disconnected numbers, if the microchip was registered to a previous owner.
